Honestly, it kinda stunk. There was good reason to shelve imo. I should have specified it was not necessarily a good edge. More just curiosity and wonder.
This show in 2020 was an eye opener for me in terms on UM decline. I hadn’t realized the disillusionment I had felt for several years was shared by a dwindling fan base.
It was my first show in a while. Billy opened and had the place packed. The crowd probably dwindled to 1/3 attendance after Billy.
Thank god it was Billy and not g**se. Billy sit-ins were quite notable. I enjoyed myself. I’d like to think today more folks would stick around, and that makes me heppy
I attended that Asheville run in 2020 and noticed everyone leaving also. UM usually plays great in Asheville, but this particular run was very forgettable outside of the sitins…until they became my last pre-COVID UM shows. I’m glad I’ve seen many better shows since.
Footnotes:
[1] ended with a “keyboard duel” between Kris and Andy on house piano and organ, Jake on additional keys; with Who’s Crying Now (Journey), Flight of the Bumblebee (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov), and Desperado (Eagles) teases
[2] unfinished
This was my first five night run with the boys and affirmed my loyalty to Umphrey’s after dabbling in the STS9 scene for most of 2007. I did Langerado right after this too and that to this day is the best festival set I’ve seen from the band. I would say it rivals 10KLF and Bonnaroo 2004 too as potentially the best festival set they’ve ever played.
The first night (Des Moines) was my 20th birthday and at People’s they put Xs and wristbands on minors so I went to the bathroom to wash the Xs off where I met @DerBlutenAnt and then proceeded to buy myself beers all night as an undeRAGER without a fake ID at the time. The next night in Davenport was my buddy Dan’s 19th birthday. RIP Dan! He would have been 37 tomorrow. Fuck heroin amirite?
I would put these two shows up there with some of the best back to back nights I’ve seen from the band. The other two nights that really come to mind right now were 11.9.07 and 11.10.07. I think Bloomington 2007 is a top five show of all time for me. I’ve said the same about 2.27.08 but that one has birthday bias. Regardless of which show was objectively “better”, I know that I was lucky as fuck to catch as many 2007 and 2008 shows as I did while at Michigan State. Grateful to say the least.
Footnotes:
[1] with The Ocean (Led Zeppelin) tease
[2] “Jimmy Stewart” with lyrics
[3] with Jeff Grady on percussion
10 years ago today! I think this one is my absolute favorite attended UM show. Such a fun spring break, it was my first one being 21 and able to drink in public/buy weed. Started the trip in Colorado, drove up to Wyoming and eventually Sandpoint for the show.
Outstanding jams throughout the whole show, if I remember correctly this was a song list show where the band didn’t decide the order in advance. The Mantis segment to start the 2nd set is the strongest part of the show in my opinion, followed by the Utopian in the first set. One of the last great Bayliss vocal stews I can remember in the Mantis.
It’s a bummer the next 3 days of this tour weren’t as great musically but at least this show was worth the effort to get to!
would probably say the same and agree with your highlights. Utopian and Mantis found incredible grooves. I only did this show of the run, my sister drove from MT and picked me up in Spokane and we spent the days before and after snowboarding.
I can’t believe I missed hyping up one of my favorite 4 night runs 15th anniversary. 2011 is when I was full on fandom and this run really cemented that. Every one go listen to the 2011 Barrymore Barrymore First Ave First Ave run.
the Madison shows some really unique jams including my one and only visions which had a spacey James Bond meets whales in the ocean vibe. The awesome lyrical that turned into similar skin, killer Phil’s opener. And the bottom half from first ave is seriously one of my goats.
Speaking of this run, does anyone have the late night recording?
