Random, Spontaneous Thoughts about UM (Part 1)

Fuck. The excitement leading up to that release was so fun.

I hear ya, I am especially nit picky about the drum engineering. I’d prefer a more raw and authentic sound than the polished and compressed drum sound on this album. But then again it just fits the tone they were setting out to achieve.

So much fun. The whole pre-order “campaign” was just balls to the wall and I loved every second of it. Waking up to a new level of bonus material being unlocked made for a great day.

I have felt the drum production on almost every UM release is lacking.

Two quick thoughts from last week:

  1. I really dig Cem 2 as the set 1 closer. It reminds me of the heady mid-90’s Phish shows when Page was left alone on the stage to close out Squirming Coil before setbreak… #allthefeels

  2. I love when Jake introduces Ben in his Cookie Monster voice… “Mr. Ben. Fac-TOR”

I love how they’ve been inserting Rush anywhere and everywhere so far this year. By my count, 8 of 20 setlists have included some Rush:

1/17 Anthem debut
1/18 Limelight debut, The Spirit of Radio and YYZ teases in AIT
1/19 YYZ intro to Fussy
1/24 Tom Sawyer
1/30 Limelight
1/31 YYZ teases in Mail Package
2/26 YYZ tease before IC
2/28 Xanadu intro to Tinkle’s, and YYZ ending to Half Delayed

Andy Frasco interviewed Bayliss on his most recent podcast and it’s some really good stuff.

holy shit that was good. thanks for the post…

Yeah I liked it so much I listened back to previous episodes where he interviewed Ryan and another with Ryan and Joel. All three are worth the listen, but the Bayliss one is the best. I learned so much I didn’t know about Bayliss before the band, the band’s forming, Mike’s departure, etc

Felt like Bayliss snuck in a snarky comment about not wanting to talk about Jeff Austin there. Wasn’t sure if it was him reminding Andy that he really didn’t want to talk about it and throwing it in his face that he brought it up anyway, or if maybe they talked about it more before the podcast and he agreed to talk about it. Regardless, loved that podcast episode. Stasik sounded like he was getting pretty emotional (understandable) talking about addiction and the Mirro stuff.

It sort of felt like Bayliss was hoping for the more light-hearted side of things. While I enjoyed him opening up about a lot of issues and personal struggles I was cringing a little because it felt like Bayliss wanted to have a more fun and less deep diving interview. Was still great, but definitely noticed him not wanting to really get into that stuff

I was very surprised that they mentioned mirro and the addiction side of things that ended up taking his life. I don’t think that’s ever really been put out into the public of how or why he passed away.

Say what you want about Frasco but he is a highly entertaining individual and seems like a decent dude. I enjoy his podcast have been a pretty frequent listener, most his interviews are pretty good.

I’d say overall I agree with you. I probably enjoy at least 2/3 interviews I throw on. There’s the occasional dud but overall he does a great job asking questions that most other interview shows wouldn’t ask. I think it helps that he can relate to the touring musicians being one himself.

After hearing me and my buddies talk about UM for years, our friend (usually a punk/ska fan) dove into UM. His initial thoughts were “They kind of remind me of Incubus, with the higher vocals but the heavier guitars.” First time I’ve heard that comparison lol

This podcast episode was great. Made BB so relatable. It really hit home for me because much of what he said is exactly how I am. Just the underlying anxiety of feeling you could lose everything at any time even with a seeminly successful career. I never really talk to anyone about it, so it’s nice to hear that there are others out there feeling the same. I’m sure it’s a pretty widespread though.

Here’s in interview with Ben Factor if anyone is interested

Nice! Would love to hear from this guy

Just got around to listening to the podcast with Ben, and it was really cool hearing how down to earth and well-spoken for Ben was. I would imagine getting the gig at his age could go straight to the head so I thought that was neat. Stories with Spafford & Mungion were cool too, it was sweet when he said his mom started crying as soon as house lights went down at the Beacon
