People who saw dozens and dozens of shows in 06-11 got jaded, simple as that. Yall can say you’re not jaded and that the band is “worse” but it’s all pretty silly. We all have memories and experiences of going on ter, chasing the band around, partying with friends, etc. and it’s impossible to separate the music from that IMO. Now we are all in our 30’s and 40’s and we have responsibilities and shit and it’s just not the same. That’s all it really boils down to, and KB’s gimicks and the festy sets just make it easy to snark on UM. But overall they are not “worse”, just different.
I generally feel the same way. At a certain point UM got better at taking improv where they wanted it to go, or at least where they thought fans wanted it to go. The extended building jams of 06-07 were less necessary when they didn’t need to take as long to arrive at that peak or resolution.
In regards to KB, Chicago remains an unforgivable sin.
I think this is making it a little too simple. Been a Phish fan longer than UM. Been a Biscuits fan just as long as I have been an UM fan. I have been completely over those bands at certain points in their careers. For Phish it was 09-11. For the Biscuits it was 2011-2016. I have absolutely loved both again ever since, because of the quality of the product and the pay off of the big moments. I still love going to shows just as much now as I did when I first started going to shows consistently. UM just isnt the same band they use to be. Some people might like what they do now as much as they did before, some might even like it more, but my actual life and age have very little to do with it.
Oh for sure the context of your life has zero impact on how you enjoy things…
I am just saying it has little to do with how I feel about live music, because I still love seeing live music, as well as a number of the bands I have been seeing forever, as much as ever.
I loved live music 10 years ago, love it even more now, and I won’t go see any of the music I enjoyed back then because I’m jaded to that shit now.
I miss live music, I even miss getting a finger up my ass when I enter certain venues, and the $10 beers.
$22 beers at the wiltern lol
On the whole 2014-2017 thing though. It’s not good. That’s when I was getting into UM and I was trying to figure out why I liked UM live but hated listening to them casually for years. Then I saw some lit shows and listened to some 2012 stuff and it clicked. I definitely enjoy what UM did in 2018/2019 much more than 14-17, which I almost never listen back to.
Holy shit. That’s like 4 beers at the Riverside.
Pretty sure my first non festival UM show was $12.
Yeah the move for LA shows is pregame hard at a brewery and maybe sneak a flask in.
Also the opener usually sounds like ass in that room for some reason
The mix for ghost note was so fucked lol. Kinda glad we only caught the end
I completely disagree with this. Jaded is becoming cynical or apathetic to something after experiencing it over and over or seeing too much of something. Since the product is not the same by a long shot, I don’t feel I’m jaded. They’ve changed some, so my interest level has as well. And I’m basing it solely off of the music, not the experience. Don’t want to argue over this. It’s based on preference. Agreed, maybe “worse” is the wrong word to use. It’s different, and based on my tastes and what I’ve come to expect from UM during my first 10+ year of listening, I don’t like it as much. Objectively, they’ve changed for sure. Subjectively, it’s not as enjoyable.
With all that said, they are still the only band that I come on an internet board to talk about. So I still love them. Just my observation, which is skewed by my preferences.
welp
im upset
Oh yeah also that venue might have insane draft beer pricing, but you can ask the main bar if they have a special. Last time it was $5 GFB bottles and I was happy with that
I think the problem is they are far too predictable the past 5 years, even during the “good” 2019. Part of that is my fault because of how much I listened to the band 2010-2013, but it just feels like they paint by number now. Even the long jams tend to be 2 3-5 minute jams and they rarely just groove for 7-10 minutes. Around 2014 I got some weird looks(jo) from friends for saying I wish UM would do a tour with no talk backs so they’d have slop through some transitions and maybe find some magic. Also just about any peak they play nowadays might as well be composed it’s so by the numbers. The only difference is whether Joel is shredding the moog along with the guitars or staying further in the background.
I brought up how even the big jams now are lots of mini jams to a couple of my friends on Saturday, they then used the second Ringo jam (which wasnt even big) to point out a prolonged groove/theme. I then pointed out to them that it was just Mrs Robinson’s Strut. Ha, then one of them told me it was not the bands fault that I can tell when they aren’t really jamming, and how most people don’t know or care. Which I am sure is true, but it shouldn’t be my fault for having an ear.
Wake me up when Dr Fameus plays a new drum beat.
