Isbell can be a little holier than thou on Twitter but I’m totally on his side here. There’s certainly space for performers in music who don’t write their own shit but it’s honestly embarrassing how little writing the pop Country stars do. Authenticity is a huge part of the appeal of country music and you have these jack offs making bank when they have nothing to say of their own experience. Jake Owen had like 30 different writers and he got one half writing credit on a single song for his recent album lol. Bo Burnham nailed it with all these guys

that song has been a pretty big thing the last week or so. Something about it being pro-lynching. Music video got pulled from CMT and Aldean released some long statement about how it’s really not racist

Aldean hasn’t ever had a writing credit on any of his “hit songs” and may have not have had one since his first album. Admittedly, I listen a fair amount of country because it’s my “wife’s” favorite genre, and I find myself drawn to artists that actually write songs. A lot of them have written hits for other “performers”.
I think you can definitely write a great song on the subject (see Dolores by Spanish Love Songs) but yea this one is def too on the nose for me. I feel like a lot of the Trump era political songs have that problem too.
