Lollllll, I mean honestly, I think I might have some autistic attachment to their music. It clears my head, always puts me in a place. They’re my go-to listen in car or in ear buds on walks etc.
But to fight the jade, you have to accept that every jam is a new opportunity. Sure that jam ain’t like the old jams, but it’s beautiful. We’re human, we grow, we change.
Kidding man I like your attitude, it’s refreshing.
And I’m kind of kidding, I love Umphrey’s, I’m just way more critical of their jams because I know their potential.
I know every show isn’t going to have a killer jam that I’ll relisten to time and time again, but that’s what makes listening to each show fun. It’s like hunting for treasure.
I listen to the most Umphrey’s to other music ratio I have since 2009 as of late. Love me some Umphrey’s and generally spin newer boards. When they are on tour I’m stoked because each weekend of shows is like 8+ hours of more Umphrey’s to listen to. And more often than not they have segments worth revisiting. Like I don’t know how many times I spun the 45 minute segment that opened the second set of the first night of the Mishawaka last September, but it’s a lot. The WTWIRD back into Fancy jam is pretty dope and I enjoy hearing N2F>Mad Love, WTWIRD>N2F a lot sine those are all good songs from my perspective.
Now that I’ve streamed over 100 shows, I am not as glued to streams as I once was. But I’ll be streaming tonight. Tomorrow I might have to sync the sound from the stream with the 49ers-Packers game but I’ll revisit both shows in the shop regardless of how much of the streams I catch. Gotta hear the shows from multiple angles.
Looking at their tour schedule right now, it’s awesome to see nearly 50 shows on deck with more to come as the summer tour dates sprinkle out. That’s well over 100 hours of new Umphrey’s to listen to. Hoping to see a lot of it live though.
I’m going to get extremely high while watching the game muted and the stream playing which will make me think certain elements of the game correlate with the jams being played.
I understand that hunt for the treasure. But my perception at UMs shows has been “ahh finally, I’m here at my favorite place, let’s fuckin rock!” And if they give a high level jam to us, then fuck yeah! But if not, that’s okay.
Like the Charlotte kick off show. It was very un-jam. Felt like they came out and said “aight here’s our tunes”. It was just getting Kris warmed up. And was still such a fun time.
I’m starting to believe it’s not UMs that’s losing their spark, just random fans on the Bort needing to take an introspective dump and realize their own potential
What makes you critical? Not trying to be a dick, just wondering. The way I see it, they’re my favorite band, why play music critic?
My biggest issue personally is when someone recommends other/newer jam bands, I always feel “yeah but they’re not as good as UMs”. I kinda defeated that when I saw my first phish show last October in Dayton. Dropped a tab night 1 and meditated on my favorite saying, “comparison is the thief of joy”. And it helped opened my mind a bit (phish light guy CK is soooooo good with some L haha) Anyways, it allowed me to check out BMFS and Goose. I always thought goose was just a meme band, but that last goosemas was fire imo. Hilarious that I was like “okay, goose is pretty good” and then they implode days later hahaha
Edited tldr: What walls do you have up to block the joy of an UMs show?
I’m more critical at home because I’m a fat fuck judging and smoking weed from my couch. It’s hard to capture the live crowd energy over streams. There’s no feeling like being a show and the crowd being in sync and the energy just explodes. Even just over a simple transition or whatever. Live brings the highs of everything I look at live shows. streamknf at home are typically more just entertainment on a weekend night vs. the whole concert experience
Idk if that makes sense. Ripping a pen and downing a coffee rn
It kinda makes sense. Sounds like y’all are only critics from the chair, but homies in the heat.
I just wanna say, try not to feed into that criticism too much. It can be self-defeating in the hunt for fun under the UMbrella. Sometimes ya gotta say “eh fuck that” and just let yourself go and enjoy the notes and chords and beats of those beautiful 6
This has been said in various forms on this board, but virtually every regular member on here got into the Band in '00/early '10s, which was a different phase of the band, and a time when they took a different approach to setlists and jamming.
We’re critical because we wish they’d sound like that again.
Where we’re going we don’t need luck, we need CRAIGGGGGGG
(Fuck it, I’m leaning in to @stringz Craig is my alter ego that exudes nothing but positivity and rage and love for this amazing group of the best musicians in rock today)
I’m back on the um train after 23. Just the amount of friends and good times, with pretty solid shows happening. This year is gonna be Cole’s year, and I’m doing everything that I enjoy. Fuck divorce, fuck cheaters, to quote my boy Jeff Austin, “nothings never gonna get me down, where I can’t pick my self back up again”
