Burying oneâs head in the sand is a choice
thatâs why Iâm asking questions and threw out 3 different disclaimers about legitimately trying to understand this better
nevermind though
How did this even all get started? Is this still @StoneJackBaller not liking Fir?
I think Iâll be safe with polka music.

You are safe with bluegrass as well.
Banjo was invinted in Africa
My point is simply tthat pretending inequality and racism doesnât exist in music is foolish. Pretending appropriation didnât play a huge role in the musical success of many artists we love (self included) is ignorant. And to pretend that race should be left out of music is something easy to say when it doesnât affect you.
Iâm not saying the only ethical thing to do is burn your led zeppelin albums, but giving credit where its due is a valid conversation.
Black musicians deserve both credit and reparations when possible
Yup and the continuous 8th note picking was influenced straight from bebop. Almost every single genre can be backtracked to black music.
I fucking love you dude
All joking aside this is the real answer. It is also ok to awknowledge this is the right answer without having to feel guilty about it.
Absolutely zero need to feel guilty. I mean we all came here from listening to jam bands, some of the whitest music on the planet.
And coming full circle, I like FF
Because most of the artists that profited off of black slave music also admitted to it and are open about that being their influence. It wasnât nefarious. Should we harp on every band that profitted off of an influence?
That is totally wrong
Amber is the color of this threadâs energy.
Yea, i feel like so many conversations dont get as far as they could due to âwhite guilt.â People get shaken into the whole âfight-or-flightâ mode and get stuck feeling like they have to defend themselves, while also trying to understand and listen. Multi-tasking rarely yeilds the best results. You have to be able to look at it without ego. You can be white, live im the real world, learn and grow, all without having to feel like a racist.
Nope not at all, many bands did their part to pay royalties and properly honor their influences. Its still a valid discussion because many have not and many minorities feel like theyâre owed reparations/royalties or more acknowledgment from the appropriation that pushed many white musicians to a level of success took black musicians much longer to reach.
To keep it UM related, red tape is an example of a song not influenced by black musicians. It almost totally follows classical chord patterns. The beauty of modern rock music is that it pulls from both sides and that while one song can be European the next song can be totally black blues influenced.
Yikes
