Best part of the song tbh. Its also fun to see the gNooBs get pissed when they return to Fir.
This. Wildcard mixes it up whether it’s for the better (hot for teacher) or worse (bulls on parade)…but either way it’s always funny hearing a drunk audience groan when the band goes back to the composed section
Definitely a huge Marley ripoff. Still generic though. This could be almost any reggae song ever. Hence, my hate for the entire genre.
You know who would never rip off a song like that? #B4L.
I guess my main issue is when they sacrifice a jam as a result of the weird momentum shift which tends to happen on occasion. Sometimes you get shit like Halloween 2019 where they just dropped into Fuzz and didn’t even have a fir jam or complete the song IIRC.
This is why Upward should be an F across the board.

Pretty sure they may used this for the bassline for APOA
Upon further reflection, changed my Upward grade to an F. It’s so obvious.
Call me a fluffier but Upward is not that bad. Yeah it’s cheesy, that’s why I like it in small doses. It’s a decent landing pad song when the band is too fatigued after some monster shit to feel one out.
Edit: but let’s discuss visions (of Parin). This song has consistently produced jams (and definitely some composed stews) in that specific unique style of UM that I will always come back for

B? You and I are usually on the same page. When they redid Wappy, I was so fucking into it. Been one of my favorite songs ever since. Perhaps I’m being too subjective with this one.
I group it in the same bucket as puppet and 3x and imo it’s the worst of those
Wappy dropped a tier the last few years
I fuckin love wappy. Probably a top 5 UM song for me
Wappy was only ever S-tier in 2011. But even now it’s a solid A tier. You know you’re in for a high energy 10 minutes.
When I said I only had 2 usually-standard songs that I would give S tier to, I forgot about Water. What an actually insane composition. I can see why some people say it’s a little notey, but I strongly disagree because that middle part is also a beautiful contrast. Wish they had more songs like it.
Being “notey” just means its prog, man. That’s when UM is at their strength, their more progressive tunes are more often than not the better ones. When they say stuff like “trim the fat”, it just means simplifying their playing… just seems like they dumb down the effort in the name of making it “accessible”. Which is fine for a few songs but as we’ve said many times don’t abandon what got you to this point
Am I the only one that is not considering improv at all when grading these songs? I’m just judging on the merit and quality of the songs themselves/how much I enjoy them.
I’m only judging on the composition. Though I do add points if the composition includes a more open ended section (eg last half of 40s) because I love those parts
Everybody is ranking them differently. I’ve never listened to an Umphrey before, so I’m just ranking on how cool the song names are.
