UM "You Pick 2" Tier List

What is your favorite 40s Theme?

Mine would be the 40s>Resolution>Theme from the Canopy Club on 4.30.2008 or the the 40s Theme from the Depot on 1.20.2010 where I’m pretty sure I saw my first On Fire jam. The jam before that part is what I’m talking about though…just some smooth sexy grooves. Both have attendance bias but they are worth a listen if you like that song a lot.

Total attendance and psychedelic bias, but Bonnarroo 06 (6/16) and Headliners (11/16/06) where they split it up, played an impromptu flippy floppy before > back into 40s.

One of my first few shows, 4/8/05, opened up with an absolutely stellar Type I version of 40’s. This is a song that I love hearing earlier versions of, but in recent shows they just don’t play it as well. My vote for A-tier is based on how it was at its peak.

For the stats nerds I’m not only logging what each song ends up at when the poll closes I’m also logging a weighting for the votes, like if the winning tier is over 50% it’s considered “Strong”, if it’s at or over 65% it’s considered “Very Strong”. Under 50% is “Soft” and (I think) at or under 40% will be “Very Soft”. I had originally thought about making it 35% so the "Very"s are equally +/- 15% but I’m not sure anything would end up as “Very Soft”…and clearly 40’s Theme should be considered “Very Soft” at this point.

But are you doing anything to prevent voter fraud?

Stop the steal!

This is my new poll. Vote if you’d like. Flaccid or bust!

I’ve actually revamped how I’m calculating the favoritism “weight”. It’s a number-based system with “S” getting 6 points per voter, all the way down to “F” getting 1 point per voter. Then it’s a simple average. This will 1) be more accurate, 2) allow us to quantify the exact favorite and least favorite songs, and 3) it means that if you vote “D” on something that ends in an “A” tier your vote still matters, because I’ve also got weighted tiers being tracked in addition to the most popular voted tier. There could easily be a situation where (for example) the most popular tier is “A” but if enough people voted “C” and “D” then it would weight down to a “B” rank. At the end of all this I’ll provide a list of songs that have different ranks for Popular Tier and Weighted Tier in addition to the regular analysis I was already planning.

Here's the methodology:

If weighted average is below/above the following score then it gets the corresponding grade:

  • S = <6 and >5.1667
  • A = <5.1667 and >4.3334
  • B = <4.3334 and >3.5001
  • C = <3.5001 and >2.6668
  • D = <2.6668 and >1.8335
  • F = <1.8335 and >1

TLDR: No more “Very Strong” or “Very Soft/Flaccid” stuff, just pure numbers

I like Anchor Drops too damn much so I bumped it to A-tier even though in terms of importance to the catalog, it’s B-tier at best.

Haven’t voted anything below a C yet. Where’s Crucial Taunt?

We’re going alphabetical so it’ll be sooner rather than later. I’m doing them in sets of 3 songs every 2 or so days. That way people can discuss a song if they want. The polls are open for 7 days so as long as you check the thread once a week you’ll be able to vote on everything

For me anchor drops is quintessential top tier UM. Same with 13 days. Like those songs way more than most of the heavy hitters

Some of these results are surprising. For example, I thought my opinion that ALB was average UM at best was an unpopular one, but looks like others agree. Also apparently people think more highly of Atmosfarag than I realized.

Curious if people are voting based on the song’s composition in it of itself or the song’s improv potential / “I enjoyed seeing this song live that one time cause it had a good jam”?
