UM "You Pick 2" Tier List

For me it’s definitely heavily based on I feel about seeing the song live. I’ve heard all the songs a million times and I’m too far removed from my original feelings on the compositions.

Yeah I’m voting by how much I would look forward to catching the song at a show. The S-tier is reserved for songs that are consistently jammed well, like Mantis.

I don’t need a song to have a massive jam to enjoy it live…

Interesting. I’m focusing more on how much I like the composition.

Same. Guess I figured since we were talking songs we were talking compositions

They both are factors for me. Even if I like a composition, I’m going to get tired of it hearing it show after show with no jam. At the same time, a song I don’t really like would have to be a legit consistent jam vehicle for me to rate it well.

I’d have a pretty hard time rating a song I hate highly just because it gets consistent jams. Most of the standard songs I consider A/S tier are kinda rare anyway

Love IC jams, can’t really stand IC.

will be getting a C at best.

I don’t think there are many that would fit the bill for me. Most I don’t like at best get kinda the samish linear jam every time (Silent Type, for example).

To me they are connected. I gave Mantis as an example of a consistently jammed song that will be on my S-tier, but I also love the composition. There are some jam vehicles that won’t be S-tier because I don’t enjoy the composition as much (Ocean Billy for example).

As another example I would say that 2nd Self is a better song than 40’s Theme, I have 40’s a tier higher because I think that on average it produces more memorable versions in the live setting (recent versions of 40’s notwithstanding).

Also I figure everyone will have their own criteria for judging these tiers and I’m okay with that.

2nd self isn’t a great comparison to 40’s IMO. It is more similar from performance to performance whereas 40’s has the potential to be more memorable live because the composed last half of the song is just a few general ideas and a goal post, not a note for note composition. This is why I rated it so high because I love compositions that have that creativity and flexibility.

My criteria are a combination of “how much do I like the song?” with “how important is this song to the band’s career?” Frequently, that latter one will correlate with “does it get jammed frequently and consistently well?” I can really only see one song that doesn’t get jammed frequently and consistently well that I would consider giving S-tier to and those who know me well might be able to figure that one out

Also, I’m aware Crucial Taunt is coming a ways down the line  I just wanted to emphasize that there are definitely some songs that will get D, and even F tiers. We just aren’t there yet.

like Silent Type

Egads. You know, I would consider that if only for the fact they took a bunch of pretty cool stews that had the whole fanbase hyped and somehow managed to make a disastrous song out of them. Sometimes the jams are cool though, so that might bump it to D tier? We’ll see when we get there.

Attachments is going to be a weird one to rate. That is a very clear F-tier composition. The jams clearly save it from that fate, but how many levels up will I bump it?

This is fun @NikoEstevan
