What a jam
Nice call!!!
Oh shizz, I remember this song.
I was about to task for you to send me these boards Josh, but then I realized you already did years ago…
20 years ago today. My 4th. Not too much improv but what is there is good. Such a variety of songs. Love Joel’s solo encore stuff.

Opening Band(s): Adrian Belew
This was the show that introduced me to Adrian, so I can’t hate on it. Drove with my buddy Chris to this from Milwaukee
The first set left a sour taste in my mouth. And there was no notable improv, imo. Belew was fun but I also didn’t think he fit in with them very well. He’s definitely awesome and I loved the opening set.
And the extended bass solo in the 2nd set was just a time eater
Yeah, it’s not a show I relisten to or anything, and I was still so new to um and jam bands in general that I left happy just from the compositions. I think this was like my 5th or 6th show.
I just looked, this was my 11th. I was so excited for a hometown throwdown. Also, it was dumb that you couldn’t bring drinks into the theater.
I was underage so that didn’t bother me lol
I hated that South Bend St Pattys show, def one of my least favorite shows attended.
CarpetCrawler:Surprised I haven’t posted this one in the past 2 years, but 15 year anniversary bump to a seriously scorching hot show. I’m not the biggest Higgins fan, nor am I a hater, but it really was the perfect encore choice for this one. The lyric of ‘hope your expectations were lower than before’ was a perfect nod to the last show they played, 5 days earlier in South Bend.
IMO, this is what that show should’ve been, but too many things were just off at the St Pat’s show.

CarpetCrawler:20 year anniversary bump!!
CarpetCrawler:It’s hard to follow up such a great story as the BDJ one, but I can’t hold back the chance to bring up my 1st two-night UM ‘run’.
This show was f’n excellent, and I could’ve been happy by this one alone. I had no idea what was about to happen the next night, and will post that one tomorrow. For now though, here’s the wonderful 3-22-02 show…

so… imagine being just high enough on shrooms to approach Joel during Particle’s red barn set at Scamp '03, introducing yourself, insisting the band play Tulsa asap, then taking it a step further by promising to cook dinner for band and crew. I was sincere in my offer, but didn’t really expect them to say yes.
The following March, the band played their first Cain’s show and I found myself in my back yard grilling ribeyes for 20 and discussing a strain called cat piss with Jake. Borrowed tables and chairs w/ paper Star Wars tablecloths all crammed into my too-small living room… dessert was homemade mocha swirl cheesecake with a guitar shaped tuile. My guests responded with a brief standing “O”. I was forever humbled.
But what sticks out to this day is what genuinely friendly, respectful, appreciative and intelligent humans they were/are. It’s a big part of why I’m still here. It’s the music that first grabbed my attention - and continues to impress and sometimes astonish, but it’s the love that keeps bringing me back, and that love is reflected in this community. Thanks for that.
Feel like I’ve seen a picture of them eating this dinner? Awesome story
In November '06 we had the pleasure of hosting the band and crew for a second round of ribeyes. That’s likely when the pic(s) you remember are from:
OMG Bayliss’ infamous salmon colored shirt!!!
CarpetCrawler: CarpetCrawler:This show, 20 years ago today, was simply unreal. I’d absolutely put it in the top 10 UM shows, of the 220+, that I’ve seen, and probably in the top 20 by any band. They were so loose & on point the whole night. The show had such an effortless feel, and it just felt so incredibly special. Both Jake & Joel were beyond friendly & happy to talk. Joel was just so pumped by how that 1st set played out, and was also super happy that they went with no set list that night. After the show, I was very happy to talk with Jake, and when I tried to step away & not take too much of his time, he kept pulling us back into the chat. What a special night! Really hope they decide to release it one day in the future. Would do/pay just about anything to relive this one.
