Today in Umphrey's McGee History

I thought you had to be 30+ besides @WhoDatVols to be on this -bort! Hello youngin’! You were cooler than me in high school I guess. My only jamband show was my first time taking LSD at STS9 5.6.06.

Lol one of the funnier things about that show is that my wife and I started dating right before that show. Her 21st birthday was the 28th, but I already had tickets to this show and commented to going. So I do this two night run and she’s partying the fuck down in Madison. I stop by Madison on my drive back to Iowa to check on her, take her to breakfast etc etc. Her and her roomates won’t answer their phones. I end up checking the front door, unlocked and slightly ajar. Go up to her room and just find her passed the fuck out, in a bed full of vomit. Somehow we stayed together lolz

True romance! I met my wife between my first (Cincinnati) and second (South Bend) shows, and when I told her I like this band called Umphrey’s McGee I was a little embarassed, then amazed to find out she actually knew who the F I was talking about (she was from South Bend). She was and still is a fan, but had plans and couldn’t make the South Bend show. I was still feeling out the catalogue at that point and she introduced me to Front Porch. One of the first text messages I ever sent was “they opened with front porch!” from a T9 phone. Fuck I’m old.

T9 texting on the Bort setlist threads early 2010 and prior was the best. I loved when someone running the thread would lose contact with the person texting in the setlist due to drugs.

Set 1: Walletsworth, Prowler > Turn & Run, August, Search 4, Tribute to the Spinal Shaft > The Floor

Set 2: Ringo, Believe the Lie, Good Ol’ Boys, Breathe > Spires, Sociable Jimmy

Encore: Miss Tinkle’s Overture

The Breathe gets most of the love from this show, and deserving so, but it’s a very solid show start to finish. August and Tribute in the first set are both very good.

This one also has a special place in my heart, especially today, as the wife and I watched Cliff Lee win game one of the WS right next door to the venue and then walked over to the show.

This was my first Umphrey’s Halloween experience, the OG Mashup show, and my first time in San Francisco. What a fucking weekend!

This show is probably bottom 5 of all UM shows I have seen. Really boring, absolutely dreadful second set.

Yeah the Kabump was really the only noteworthy part. Set 1 is still decent though

I really enjoy this show. Much Obliged > Uncommon, Eat, 2x2 for more of that proggy greatness. Then the 2nd set starts with that killer RW > Higgins that clocks in at nearly 30 minutes, the Higgins jam is like a continuation of the RW improv, really neat proggy, crunchy side of UM. D>No Comment(Pop Tart for you OGs out there)>BK is well done. Of course ya can’t forget the WBG > rare full band Orfeo > WBG. What a party this was, lots of energy in that crowd/room. Maybe that was the booms, or both?? Both. Love it \mm/

Set 1: Nipple Trix > Wife Soup, Room to Breathe > Breathe, Much Obliged > Uncommon, Eat, 2x2

Set 2: Robot World > Higgins, Der Bluten Kat > No Comment > Der Bluten Kat, Life During Exodus, All In Time

Encore: Wizard Burial Ground > Orfeo > Wizard Burial Ground

This is a good little wife soup too. Instead of Bayliss jumping into his solo him and Jake build into a great uplifting peak. Now I don’t generally advocate for Bayliss forgoing his solos but it works here

It is a solid Wife Soup, great tone setter for the show. Definitely a good, patient build

That Tribute > Groove Holmes is one of the best one-two punches of UM I’ve ever seen.

Just walked by the Barrymore this evening and was flooded with memories of getting down so hard during that 11/2 Tribute!

That whole run was so fun. I hope they play the Barrymore again someday.
