The Newb Thread

I think this may be my biggest newb question yet. Idk if it’s my hearing disability or my limited understanding of music, but I have a hard time differentiating Bayliss from Jake. The only thing that I know for certain is the chugs and heavy metal riffs are Jake. Other than that, when yall describe things like “Bayliss Bliss” and his solos, I have no idea who’s playing what during a song. I’m pretty certain that I can hear when they exchange the same riff during a certain kinda jam, but again I can’t put a face on the guitar. When I started listening, I assumed that Jake did all the heavy lifting, and BB did rhythm and focused on singing.

if listening on headphones, the best way to tell is that Jake is on the left and BB is on the right. I find them to both have very distinct and different tones/styles, but idk how to describe it other than just knowing how they sound

In 40s, BB builds the solo, quiet to the peak. Jake comes in with the peak “baaa da buuuum, baaa da buuuum”.

BB’s tone and style are more watery
Jake’s tone and style are more prickly

Describing style/tone is so hard to do without referencing musical tropes

True, but I always explained it as BB is more fluid and Jake is more rhythmic. Obviously they violate that’s but on average…

Yeah, that’s a good way to put it. I keep just going back to percussive for jake

going to shows and putting the visual aspect of what you see the guitarists doing combined with what you are hearing, also helps

Bayliss solos- 2x2, 40s, slacker, august just off the top of my head but there are certain songs that have specific sections for the BB solos

I really get bummed thinking of how much time I let past before I gave these dudes a shot. Missed out on some good concerts.

This is genuinely an issue. Being hard of hearing, I rely on subtitles, lip reading, and body language to make up for the loss. Trying to understand the nuance of UM by strictly listening, is gonna present it’s difficulties.

It is true that during improv that Jake typically takes the melody, either organically or by force

How long have you been seeing the band?

I knew of them in the early 00’s, never got to see them. I was more into the club and rave scene then. I was gifted tickets to 12/30/10 and was expecting something mellowish since they were a “jam band”. Not only were they not mellow, but I was duped into smoking a J of straight keef, and was wrecked by the loudness of it all and the lights. I don’t even remember much of it. Idk why, but it kinda turned me off then. Fast forward to 2018ish, and I started hearing some of their HOF stuff on Spotify. Covid hits, and Nugs had a long run of free trials, and I got hooked. In fact, I think my addictive nature got the best of me. I thought I’d heard all the best stuff via the HOF stuff, and assumed that their newer stuff would be better and more polished. I started making playlists based on what I had heard. I also watched whatever shows I could find on YT, on them minty nights, for the visuals. I bought into Sacred Rose, only cuz it was a festival and I really didn’t want to do Northcoast again, so I convinced my buddy to go to that. I somehow got directed to here, looking for recs, and I ended up spending so much time listening to shows and best versions and lost a lot of my life to Umphrey’s. Holy fuck, I ramble.

TLDR; Saw them twice.

Gotta be hard to tell the difference if you’ve only seen them twice.

Other issue is I’m usually not into looking at the musicians when I’m partying at shows. I tend to look at the lights and the whatever when my eyes roll into the back of my head.

I might have the lowest show count of any fan for any DBMB, but I’m definitely a wook at heart. I appreciate the sacrifice that some of yall made to pass on the knowledge of this OK band.

Its never been about show count. Idc what @OSUmBeaverPhreak says

That’s good for you in a way with a low show count you should be less jaded than all of us and be able to appreciate most live shows you are able to attend rather than comparing it to one of the best nights of your life over a decade ago.

Much more often than not, the guitar doing the textural background stuff in a jam is Bayliss.
