I cannot imagine playong drums that long, or any instrument. What a wild moment in music history.
To your best recollection, was the music good or did it come off as extended noodling just to kill time?
It was ridiculously good. There is quality video of most, if not all of the set. The first night was 3 sets, all of which crush. The 2nd and 3rd set of N1 are pretty damn spectacular. The 1st set of 12/31 was a late afternoon set that was pretty long and has some serious standout moments like the SOAM-> Catapult, but the 11:45pm to 7ish set was relentless. There were certainly some slower spots, but the energy through the majority of the set was bonkers. Still don’t know how they did it, or how so many of us made it all the way through. I’m still expecting them to drop a big boxed set of this at some point.
I have a few ideas
It was crazy, because they had a port-o-potty on stage, but IIRC only Page and Mike used it once each. I wonder if there’s any good interview out there where that topic is discussed.
Seeing Reprise tonight. Basically doing the Dark Star thing but for Phish with Chris and Adrian from Kung Fu. Pretty awesome stuff. Playing 12/28/95 in full
It was ludicrously good. The Sand is one of my favorite Phish jams and they uncorked that one around 3:30am. It was a peak concert experience in so many ways. They did announce it beforehand, “midnight to sunrise” was the tagline. Fishman starting Harry Hood again out of sheer exhaustion and forgetfulness and then immediately course correcting > 2001 as the sun rose was incredible. I remember the music during the midnight set like it was yesterday, I could not tell you what we ate or otherwise sustained ourselves throughout the entire weekend.
There’s an interview somewhere where the band talks about brainstorming ideas that led to Big Cypress. Something about them wondering how long of a period they could continuously play a show. If I remember right they were joking about trying to play nonstop for multiple days, and if they did, would anyone still be around to witness it?
Yeah “the long gig” was something they had half joked about for years. It definitely was a formative part of what became the midnight set.
They had two other ideas for millennium that came relatively close to reality. The first was a specific plot of land in Hawaii but that was abandoned pretty quickly because of the travel for fans and the logistics of planning from so far away. The second was cruise ships, it would have been called “A Band On Ship” and they started planning it but smartly realized what a nightmare it would have been. Then someone found the Seminole Reservation and the rest is history.
Last post (maybe) … one of the all time Phish segues, and it just happened casually around 4:45am.
Drowned > After Midnight
realistically what are my odds of getting tickets to 12/29 or especially 12/30 that don’t cost a million dollars?
There won’t be a single ticket that will cost a million dollars.
Day of and you’ll be fine
i hear this often but it stresses me tf out especially since i’d be coming in from the next state over that day. do online tickets for cheap pop up or do i have to go put my finger out?
Haha! Yeah, that’s the clip I was thinking about.
Do 12/28 instead. I usually grab a ticket day of for under $100
can’t make 12/28
Day of on like stub hub or cash or trade. I’ve never done finger up
I listened to the 2nd set of 12/29/94 while directing traffic at a fundraiser last night. Jesus Hoobastank Christ. That Bowie is a treasure. I was laughing maniacally in the middle of the street.
