I don’t even know the words of the song beyond “Sigma Oasis”, nor have I heard the song more than two or three times, so the rest is me making sound effects to what I presume the melody of the chorus is.
Outside of songs I’ve heard 100s of times and maybe a select few more, I’m really bad at keeping song lyrics in order in my head. Which is probably why I’m drawn to music where decipherable lyrics are not the focus or point.
IQ had a blast during the acoustic set I saw Trey play in 2011 or 2012 but I hate a good chunk of his newer catalog and don’t want to shell out whatever the asking price is. Bet y’all will get some A++ Trey banter tho. That’s worth half the price tbh.
Terry story teller is great. I saw some tix for Chicago were over $100 and that’s gonna be a no from me dawg … although the symphony hall is incredible.
Kodak Theater is 5 minutes from my house, just scored first row of Balcony. Saw his solo show in Ithaca a few years back and it was cool, minus Summer of 89. ooooof
Even though I’m not going, I’m still in the YEMSG group chat for this year. Talking about past Phish NYEs, and I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that 25 years ago, a bunch of phans drove to the bottom of nowhere Florida and saw Phish play an NYE show until sunrise.
Probably a pretty Gen Z take but the fact that this all happened without smartphones or readily available digital directions blows my mind.
I did this one (‘96 & ‘97 also) & it was wild. We sat in the line of cars between Naples and the Big Cypress reservation for about 20 hours. With all the people coming from east and west, then exiting to a 1 lane road, it was a f’n mess. Had to shit so bad when we pulled in and parked, that we bee lined for the port-o-potties and had a super hard time finding out car as it was like 12:30an. Ended up running into friends while searching for the car. Before cell phones were a thing, you just made plans to try to meet at a logical spot. Also, there used to be big bulletin boards at some fests & you could hang a note for someone if they knew to look/check there. It was certainly tougher, but we survived. Even if there were cell phones, I really doubt service would’ve been rocking in that area. Same with Clifford Ball or Great Went & Lemonwheel.
This is incredibly fascinating. I know that exact area you are talking about and I’m sure it was a shit show, especially once you are closer to the Everglades and what not. I know necessity dictated the meeting spot, but the fact that a plan revolved around a public location hundreds of miles away is a hard concept for me to grasp
There was always some spot that was assured to be there, like the closest port-o-potties to the venue entrance or the entrance itself. It’s not quite as difficult as you think, if you just planned ahead. I feel like you would’ve figured it out, you’re a smart and resourceful guy, especially after you were at your first event like that. Don’t get me wrong, there were absolutely times where you just never found someone you wanted to see, but things were gonna be all right anyway. To be honest, I ~kinda~ miss those days, as there weren’t always people staring at their phones and texting during sick parts of a show. People were slightly more dialed into the music. I’m guilty of checking set lists & whatnot myself, but some folks just won’t stop paying attention to their devices instead of just being in the moment.
I was honestly mind blown with the people on their phones texting during the Top Note Sessions last week. I get taking a few photos or whatever, but not texting or scrolling social media during that.
The first night I think it must of been some bored wives dragged to the to show, some chick took her headphones off halfway through and was just scrolling. Seems like a total waste to me, I’m sure there’s a lot of people who would have loved to be in the room for that who would’ve appreciated it more.
Clifford Ball were my first Phish shows then I did every festival through Coventry. Big Cypress was absolutely insane, every one of their festivals was an adventure getting there but that one was crazy. I miss the pre cell-phone era as well even though it presented many challenges.
Did fans know ahead of time at Big Cypress of the bands plans to play until sunrise? Or was that a surprise. I cant imagine thinking youd get a 2 hour set and then all of a sudden 7 hours later theyre still going
It was well known. Trey had made a comment about the idea way before the event was announced, so when it came to fruition it was beyond words. It was a very special thing to be a part of, for sure.
