I mean somewhere, I’d have to dig it up. Jake refers to jamming/stewing/improv/jo’ing as having a leader or a “shepherd” - his phrasing, not mine - in order to function correctly. I was pretty much just building off of that

Yeah…the best recent jams I recall start with a good idea from the low-end then get built on and peaked out from Jake.
Overly relying on Jake to come up with jams out of thin air can definitely be a pitfall for the band. Personally I still enjoy that, but not as much as full band hose. Jake will always come up with ideas if put in that role though.
Stasik to my ears has been the biggest improvement in um’s jams over the past decade. That, or I’ve just learned to appreciate bass more.
Footnote: I have zero actual music knowledge

Does Joel lead jams or is he just there to keep the jams steady and stable?

Maybe occasionally?
Seems more like he either hides in the background adding texture or occasionally solos during jams (sometimes effectively). moe. also seems to struggle integrating vibraphone or keys seamlessly into improv.

Some of my favorite improv is where Joel takes melody on the moog during a build. That is, until Jake steps all over him.

Yeah, feels like lately Jake has been taking cool dance grooves and suddenly shifting them toward rawk peaks that all sound like a DBK or Conduit jam.
But summer 2022 → March 2023 had so much good shit and they are still playing pretty well, just not up to those highs.
