Continuing on my 2006 love, N2F’s were just outrageous. Love the 9/27/06 and the reprise out of OoO is just crazy tension/release. The 10/4/06 version with reprise out of VoP, the tension/release is insane. And those N2F Jake solos back then…holy fuck! Musical journeys that you never get anymore.
I think 06-07 was peak Jake in terms of his overall playing. He was more melodic and relied on his stunt crutches a little less.
Yeah great way to put it. I’m guilty as any player of infusing my very small bag of “spicey tricks” in my playing to add some pizzaz but Jake does it so much in recent years, back then it seems like he focused more on the actual notes and musical journey, less spastic.

Yup, agree with the above. Many of my favorite UM jams feature melodic/textural Jake. He’s the band member most likely to ruin a good idea but also the most likely to bring something that takes it to JotY territory.
