I think Billy’s is a little classier and less overbearing. Anders tone can be pretty jarring and take away from the jam. I’ve never been a huge Greensky fan though so who knows.
Anders plays quite a bit around here. He’s very good friends with a local band John Stickley Trio. He’s a super chill dude. And honestly I like his playing better when he’s not playing with GSBG
Anders wails over the top and doesn’t really blend or listen to the band. It’s like the 4848 festival N2F with all of Greesnky, UM and Billy on stage and all you can hear is Anders the whole time.
If he played it cool it would probably play out that way more often.
I saw GSBG twice and enjoyed both times. The first time though was the best because it was boring AF but it was the last set on the last night of a fest and we had an inflatable couch by the soundboard. Needed something stimulating but also not exciting and it nailed it.
That’s sweet. Hopefully my friends and I have just had unlucky circumstances, but the few times I’ve been around him my takeaway is “man that is not a guy I want to party with”
For better or worse, the band shifted in style post-Anders. Prior to Anders, they were just another jamgrass band. Post-Anders, everything changed. Paul started using reverb/distortion to match Anders dobro-style. Less picking. Similar to UM, they found a niche within jamgrass that hadn’t been explored yet and they’ve exploited it for all its worth.
Still remember my first time seeing them in the front room at Bell’s. Thanksgiving run ‘06. Stasik was one of the other 50 people there. Got to see them practice on a front porch on Lovell St in Kzoo a few times that following spring. Crazy how far they’ve come.
It really is Anders’ distortion that kills me. When you think about how much better he sounds with a clean tone by contrast it grinds my gears even more. Thinking about songs like All Four or Don’t Lie sound so much worse with that cheap ass tone on top.
Billy’s distortion can be hit or miss but he’s talented enough to not use it as a crutch like Anders does.
I know it was out of UM’s control, but do you know if they talked to the venue about lining up cars at Seat Geek? Last time around, my group had a premium ticket (was one of the first 50 cars in) and was parked all the way to right in the B section. Guy told us thats what management told him to do.
