King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Haha true. I’m sure we could get @mal on board.

If you are interesting in a Gizzard discography listening, please reply and we can find a time and schedule that works for everyone involved. I’ll let it simmer for a week or so to gather potential interest.

Okay here is what I am thinking. 1 album per week to give everyone enough time to listen based on varying schedules and available time. Start next week on 3/1, begin with their earliest releases and go through the entire catalog over a period of 18 weeks in chronological order, studio albums only. Thoughts? Suggestions?

2011 Willoughby’s Beach 3/1/2021 3/7/2021
2012 12 Bar Bruise 3/8/2021 3/14/2021
2013 Eyes Like the Sky 3/15/2021 3/21/2021

Also do we want to include Willoughby’s Beach? It is a 22 minute EP that was released in 2011 but it is on Spotify.

Edit: WB has been added.

Hell yeah. Sounds good to me. I vote to include WB

There is also another short 4 track EP from 2011 called Anglesa that I have never heard. Could include that one if we wanted as well. As far as I can tell it is the first thing the band ever recorded.

Or maybe people can just listen to that in the meantime to get stoked for the discogrpahy journey. Only the first 4 tracks are part of the actual EP but the youtube link also has some other singles from the early days as well:

works for me. they’ll probably have another new album out by the time we wrap this up in June.

Have always wanted to give these guys a more fair shake but the size of the catalog is daunting and dissuaded me in this past. Will def participate in this, good idea.

I think I’ve listened to most if not all of their discog but not in order. I like this idea.

Love it, I’m in

Fucking LOL it’s going to take us over 3 months to run through their discography. Not a complaint, just an observation of how wild that is

Well, this was easy

Haha yeah it is pretty wild. We could definitely shorten the time period for each album if we wanted, but I think doing it by week makes it a bit easier to keep track of and lets more people participate.

Welcome to week 1 of the King Gizzard discography journey.

Borters below are people who expressed interest so I’ve tagged you as a reminder. If you are no longer interested or miss a week here or there, no worries at all. This is just meant to be a fun thing that generates discussion. Anybody else feel free to join us at any time.

I haven’t spent a ton of time listening to WB, so I’d forgotten how enjoyable this album is. A pretty straightforward effort in KGATLW context but the short track times and uniform sound make it easily digestible as a front to back listen. It’s all psych-surf, very reminiscent of the music Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin were making in the early aughts, but it tickles my pickle.

6/10

Standout tracks: Danger $$$, Crookedile, Willoughby’s Beach, Let It Bleed

i’m surprised how clean they sound for a first record from a relative nobody at the time (i think??). great production for a psych rock debut.

Good point, they really nail the intentional lo-fi vibes. I often take their production for granted because I’m too engrossed in figuring out what the sound of each new release is.

Admittedly this is the only Gizzard album that I had not previously listened to all the way through, so this was a fun listen for me. It definitely has a much more surfy vibe than most of their other albums, which I do actually really like and was a huge initial draw for me getting into this band in the first place. I hear a lot of Brian Jonestown Massacre vibes in the songwriting on this album (especially Let It Bleed). Overall I think it is decent and while I did enjoy it I definitely think this ranks near the bottom of their catalog for me. I like it but with how much I really enjoy many of their other albums I’m not sure how much replay value this one has for me.

Agree with 3x40 on some of the standouts. I’d say Let It Bleed, Black Tooth, and Willoughby’s are my favorite tracks.
