Has UM's popularity declined?

I still enjoy listening to standard versions of most of these songs on a live setting, as well as much of UM’s earlier catalog. I do thoroughly enjoy their improv and is the primary reason I go to shows. The new material does very little for me.

I thought it’s you was one of their better releases since Mantis, yet they don’t even play more than half of the songs on the album anymore

You identified a single show’s worth of new songs you like. What do they play on the next night?

Stringz kinda said it well, but they’re a niche band that always seems to want to cater to the fans they don’t have. Which feels like a losing battle in the long term. For example I never understand their festival mindset. Go play mindblowing whacky UM shit and not your mediocre standard pop songs. They don’t always focus on their strengths and they’re at their best when they’re in a more dgaf mindset

All pre-Mantis songs.

March 3, 2010 Umphrey’s McGeeThe Westcott TheaterSyracuse, NY, USA

Set 1: Tango Mike[1] > Example 1[2] > The Fussy Dutchman, Got Your Milk (Right Here)[3]-> Anchor Drops, Dump City, Nemo > Mulche’s Odyssey

Set 2: Atmosfarag, Out Of Order > Nemo, In the Flesh? > Another Brick in the WallBridgeless > Professor Wormbog > I Ran > Last Man SwervingBridgeless

Encore: Andy’s Last Beer

Footnotes:
[1] debut, original; Umphrey’s took the stage performing along with Tango Mike being played over the P.A.
[2] unfinished
[3] with Stranglehold (Ted Nugent) jam

This was a show I caught on the Winter 2010 tour with no Mantis tracks. So something like this would be dope.

That’s probably where you’re in the minority. UM can’t count on their fans being so burnt out on the old stuff that they’re very accepting of their newer material.

When I see shows with my sister and they play something that debuted after Alex’s House she starts saying “when are they gonna play the classics?” UM can’t really count on their fans being stuck in ‘03 either though.

This new material isn’t it though. Just because some of these songs like Seasons and Staircase get to the jam in three minutes doesn’t make them good, just tolerable.

It’s literally so simple. Just play extended gritty industrial dance jams like it’s ‘08 and the theaters will fill.

2008 was the best year of my life so far. I did 34 Umphrey’s shows, saw Radiohead in five countries, graduated college, then went to Holidaze and New Years at the Auditorium Theatre to cap it off. It’s been all downhill since then.

But seriously, who has a best of 2008 Nugs playlist handy? @cryan024 ?

To put things in a better perspective, I’d much rather see SqFt play “Cause for Alarm” in full (without any improv) than UM playing a setlist of all new(er) songs. The difference is I thoroughly enjoy that album, new UM (even with improv), not so much

Apparently we aren’t the only ones discussing it

It was a busy weekend for UM to play the northeast up against some popular festivals and a busy schedule all around lately in the area. I had a great time and loved the old school feeling of fun and mixed up setlists and some dance parties :tada: :dancer::dancer::dancer: Saturday was rough for me and I rallied as best as I could …. luckily catching a second wind so I was able to enjoy the show!!!
