For his first time ever hearing these songs I think he’s pretty solid at figuring them out on the fly. He does make some things sound more complicated than they actually are though.
I know Umphrey’s pretty damn well, but unfortunately have little to no actual knowledge regarding music theory, so it’s been pretty cool to see some technical input, regardless of any inaccuracies or overcomplications. Shows me a side of their music that I’m pretty unfamiliar with.
Edit: Lol part way through watching the WBG video, so now want to clarify that the above is more directed at the Puppet video. This WBG one seems to be just him geeking out and attempting to replicate certain portions. Still a fun watch.
And I know none of that. All I know is he’s really good at knowing that this is a real band. He definitely knows that.
That part definitely cracks me up. Love this guy’s vibe, all else equal.
And also (paraphrasing): “This other guitar player is actually really good!”
Not being sarcastic at all, would actually appreciate your insight on where he was wrong. Would be super cool to hear for those that aren’t musically trained.
This guy is fucking hilarious. I wish I was that enthusiastic about literally anything.
Does this guy even realize that’s a jam in the middle ?
Also it’s so fucking true that it’s so easy to take UM for granted. They really are fucking amazing. I forget sometimes.
I mean, I’m a pretty huge fan of beer. But I get what you mean.
Definitely feel this. Get so used to some songs that I can become pretty blind to the complexity of some of the tunes and jams that I dig so much.
Just watched the Puppet video. He’s obviously not trying to break it down for people that are balls deep in theory. It’s for people that are trying to learn songs and get into playing. Or that’s how I took it.
At the end of the day though yes fuck this dude for not being on the level
He does now. Chris Mitchell commented on the video and gave him the heads up.
Learning or “learning”?
I hate the way he moves his head when he does that intro jam
I guess he played a show last night where he had to cover this. So he’s going through breaking down the song for himself.
“this band, this band, man, this band…”
I think I should start doing UM reaction vids…
.
That’s part of his method for playing jam band guitar
I mean I am one to talk I make the dumbest faces while playing. But still
I was thinking more of “reacting” and comparing where UM ends their jams whereas tDB would continue jamming without asking for a VIP ticket to get the full improv experience.
