Grateful Dead Shows that Steal Your Face

@dtbar1 is right, WRS is the freakin jam. This one used to not really be my favorite when i was younger. But lots of deep stuff in these lyrics

Winter gray and falling rain
We’ll see summer come again
Darkness falls and seasons change
Same old friends the wind and rain
Summers fade and roses die
You’ll see summer come again
Like a song that’s born to soar the sky

I love it.

Did I say that in this thread, or you just remember me saying that in person? Regardless, you are god damn right! One of my absolute favorite GD tunes. The drop into Let It Grow always gets me so good.

Obviously the one from Dicks Picks Vol. 12 is a favorite of mine.

I keep coming back to DP18 a lot recently. The PITB>The Wheel>PITB segment is just so damn good.

I remember kicking it in denver one time years back (2014?) in that basement and you talking about how hard WRS rages. It was in response to my argument that the Hunter/Garcia element is far superior to the Weir half of the coin, and you brought up Vol 12.

The same WRS has come up multiple times online since, but that was my first time I heard someone really lobby for it as a premium tier dead song

at the time i also lacked the technical proficiency to understand the implications of the EFF and Barlow’s role in all that too. I have come to respect him way more over the years

Nice, I wasn’t sure if you remembered that or not!

I actually know nothing about EFF or Barlow, so I will need to look into that. Where is a good place to start? Wiki?

I still stand by my love of Bobby songs, and think that the contrast between Jerry and Bobby songs really makes a perfect dichotomy, which makes GD so great.

I listened to 8/27/72 for the first time in a few years last week. Damn, always hits the spot. Gotta be a top 5 for me.

The Merle Haggard cover “Sing Me Back Home” is SOOOO fuckin sad, and what an excellent version! That’s the Dead I live for…Jerry singing songs that (should) make you sob.

I love the duality of the cosmic vibes and country (roots) vibes

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but in the past if you share an archive link, it won’t actually play past the first song. Or if you copy their pre-supplied “iframe” snippit it won’t show up. This problem is now fixed and you can embed the iframe for archive.org.

So for our first live example, I present a smoking 1976 show. In 1976, jerry was playing the Travis Bean guitar. I love the way it sounds, and I think 76 all around is a kick ass year with serious phil zone. I prefer it to 78.

Some weird panning in the mix. Sounds like Jerry, and Phil is panned hard left and Bobby and Keith are panned hard right. I kinda like it.

one of my very first cassettes when i started colllecting (78)
always a favorite
stage banter’s classic, and to have the video resurface years later was such a treat

I tend to run into ppl at the oddest places… re:Barlow… had the good fortune to meet him in 2004 at an SCI thing at Horning’s Hideout. He was a part of a roundtable discussion about the future role of psychedelics in society, along w/ Carolyn Garcia and some other OG psychonauts. When the formal event ended, some of us hung and after a while i found what seemed like the right moment to approach him and initiate a convo. He was receptive, down to earth, easy going, with a weathered face, a wry smile and deep eyes. We chatted in generalities for 5 or so minutes about music, drugs and politics; at once sharing both optimism and cynicism, eventually wishing each other well and going our own ways. No profound revelations or world-saving insight. Just a friendly chat. It was quite nice.
One more random note regarding Jerry’s Travis Bean. I saw him play it once - 2/9/79 Soldiers and Sailors, KC KS Josh the younger attended in utero. Then in 2017 he (young Josh) saw Jake play the same guitar in sandpoint. round and round it goes.
