Big Man, Pig Man: The Pink Floyd Thread

Sounds like you and I are on the same page for ranking those albums

Personally, I would rank Piper at the Gates of Dawn over The Wall. It radiates with Syd’s essence of pure psychedelia which is to me, the foundation for the band and ultimately why I love the band so much. The tension and release in the album is something unique too. Interstellar Overdrive sludges with weird tension and anxiety for the whole 10 minutes only to be reprieved by the absurdity of The Gnome. I love it lol.

I agree with all of this except ranking it over The Wall because I honestly don’t know where to put The Wall.

I find The Wall very hard to rank because to me it’s much more than an album. I listened to The Wall 100s of times before I ever saw the movie but I couldn’t help but feeling letdown. The vivid imagery and story that The Wall creates in my head when I listen to it is far better than the movie they put out in 1979. Sure it comes on an album and has tracks but it’s just not the same as Animals or Meddle in my opinion.

I’ll never be able to rank their albums accurately. The only thing I know is I’m so sick of the 4 songs from Wish You Were Here that I would probably have to put that album 7th.

I agree. There is so much criteria each of the albums nails in different meaningful ways whether it’s by popularity, concept, innovation, impact on music history, development of style for the band, etc etc that you could rerank in so many combinations. I think that as humans we have a tendency to organize/categorize/rank and anything that could make that difficult/defy that is something special.

Well said.

The exact reason you can’t compare Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast to Great Gig in the Sky.

yes! Alan’s psychedelic breakfast is so nice to me and was a big experimental leap for the band. the only objective reason that it could be ranked lower is that the band said they hate it lol

Love me some Atom Heart Mother too. Not sure where I’d put it though. Somewhere in the range of Meddle for me. Side note, I’ve always thought One of These Days would be a badass tune for UM to cover. Just a little Floyd jam > something else. Would be a hell of a set 2 opener. I’d be so fired up to hear Joel make those wild noises on a synth.

My dream (besides UM covering some animals) would be for UM to do a utopian with a huge any color you like jam in it. Check out 74 wembley any color you like for an example. 8 min soundboard jam on YouTube.

I have a bunch of live boots and love the period post Syd/pre dark side where they just jam the fuck out.

Also obscured by clouds is underrated as fuck.

Ooof ummagumma at the very bottom? The live side is so good. I’d take that over most post Roger stuff

Yeah but the studio side is borderline unlistenable. I agree with it being last.

You’re telling me “several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict” isn’t your ringtone?

The live half is great but I’m not really counting it because those songs were already released.

That’s what I mean though, it’s so hard to go with any bottom 5.

Dark Side of the Moon (perfect album IMO)
Animals
Wish You Were Here
The Wall
Piper At the Gates of Dawn
Meddle
A Saucerful of Secrets
Atom Heart Mother
The Final Cut
Obscured by Clouds
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
The Division Bell
More
The Endless River
Ummagumma

I could agree with that too. Saucerful is great and it’s got the only song that features every member.

The live disc of Ummagumma is the original improg!

Honestly the PF release I listen to the most these days is Delicate Sound of Thunder.

Have you listened to the 2019 remix? They added extra songs to the album! They added On The Run and Great Gig in the Sky as well as Welcome to The Machine.

Put me down as a huge Obscured by Clouds fan. Underrated album IMO.
