@CarpetCrawler has the right idea waiting to listen to it though. We have set his expectations so low now that when he finally listens to it he may think it’s good.
Ok if you enjoy this album, great. I’m almost envious. And I typically try to not judge people on musical taste.
But Magnum Opus? The best album they’ve released (or even top 3)?
Makes me wonder if I was ever such a fanboy. But as long as I can remember I could still have a balanced nuanced view of this band. Just hilarious. And confusing.
If you were dead you wouldn’t need to worry about enjoying it either way

LMAO. A+
I love this movie so much. Bought it out of the $5 bin at Walmart when I was in North Carolina with the amigos. My 4 friends absolutely hated it and made fun of me for it the rest of the trip.
To this day whenever I suggest something that I think is good they say something along the lines of “this better not be some old man country shit”
Imagine hating no country, a certified masterpiece. Get better friends
they are actually incredible supportive and great dudes that I’ve known for 20+ years at this point.
doesn’t mean they don’t have shit taste. I was honestly surprised but then we drank Bud Light and listened to Eric Church the rest of the weekend so it kinda made sense.
Yeah, I’m just trolling. I have similar friends who love hot garbage, but have always been there for me
same. im waiting for the vinyl to arrive
yeah I’m just explaining because I thought about it.
how can you hate a movie with one of the all-time cinematic villains?
boom. third place^
I’m happy I didn’t waste any money on the vinyl (or any format, for that matter)
it’s not me, it’s wife
I tried to listen to the album for the third time today. I cant seem to even make it through a single song without wanting to skip.
I know most of my takes around here always kinda just get viewed as hate, but I really really tried to give this album a chance.
I have been the healthiest/happiest/least depressed/least miserable human I have maybe ever been in my life. I have been finding the joy in just about everything life has to offer.
Having said that, I just cant find a single song/thing about this record to get behind.
The only reason I even gave it more than one shot is because it is UM and I have been listened to them since 2004, but if this wasnt UM I would have turned it off instantly.
The vocals/lyrics are really bad, and the entire album focuses on those bad vocals and lyrics… Bayliss forcefeeds so much crap and unnecessary meat into every single verse on this album. It just sounds like Police jibberish over extremely simple/boring music. But without the lyrical/vocal/harmonic benefits of the Police.
I am sure people like it. I am not entirely sure how people like it, but I am sure people do. There is no way anyone can tell me this is a classic UM album, though. This sounds nothing at all like Umphrey’s McGee. At least not to me. It sounds like the Brendan Bayliss Project trying to land an opening gig touring with BTS.
Happy the folks who are happy are happy. I hope the band is happy. This is who they are/want to be, and good for them. I just think it is foolish to assume older fans are the ones who changed or that they are looking at this through some jaded microscope or love for their “glory days.” This just simply is nothing at all like the super interesting/technical band I feel in love with damn near 20 years ago.
That is my 0.2 cents. Album art is the only good thing about this album, and yes, I listened to Escape Goat and Hiccup.
Holy fuck lol
Cant wait to squeeze you and Jilzie at the Caverns
