I have the same stats basically as you Mike except I’ve seen them in Delaware but not New Mexico and Arkansas…
Crooked One jam is excellent, that’s my kind of UM.
Crooked One is definitely great*, love the territory they get into around the 10 min mark or so
Heard dat. This Crooked One is nice, but in terms of relisten-ability this show doesn’t have much going for it. Norvolk and Raleigh on the other hand… much more
Norfolk is definitely having replay value for me, basically the whole show is great.
Except for Always October. I literally barfed on the soundboard.
I need to relisten to both but except for a couple jams in set 1, it felt like Jake dropping the ball over and over during improv at RVA.
Norfolk had arguably worse setlist and better jamming.
Still had fun’d
Richmond just felt flat, like the improv rarely went anywhere. They’d find a groove and it’d be fun but then Jake would noodle a bit and they wouldn’t do anything else with it. Buttered noodles.
Norfolk felt so much more patient and intentional. It was like they were really ‘yes and’ing each other. Someone would add something and the rest would give them space to realize it before moving on.
Classic last night of run. UM runs out of ideas.
At the end of the show Kris actually said he was bored and that he wanted the Goose drummer back.
“Oh no! I hurt my shoulder”
Nooo. Kris is so much better with um* and esp during improv
After nearly a year off from playing together, these shows were very solid and bode well for later in the tour. You can’t expect a best show ever right away after that.
I love Kris, but I gotta give a lot of credit and respect to Ben for the way he held it down. I hope he has a lot of success in the rest of his music career.
That’s fucking awesome! I’m trying to visit every state (unrelated to UM) and have 12 left.
Poke comments all night
Shoulda called the event the Poke Bowl
Don’t understand the setlist hate… can someone explain? Besides 2 new songs, the setlist is great. 5 UM classics.
Nothing?? Crickets (in the night… look out, splatter!
Name was taken. Biscuits Caves. On account of all the heady jams and everyone getting laid
I mean Fussy is not a great set two opener. Some of my favorite jams come out of the second set opening song and this one isn’t a jam vehicle. The Crucial Taunt abrupt ending is awkward. Pure Saturation is a good jam vehicle but right into Always October is not ideal because that’s two AFAF songs back to back; you really need to blend the new tracks in with the old to win people over. If someone who loves Umphrey’s but hasn’t paid attention has two songs in a row they don’t know, they might lose interest in the show. Educated Guess is not a good way to end at set (whereas Remind Me definitely has an end of set/encore vibe to it.)
Basically you can always find shit to complain about if you want to. I never judge a show by it’s setlist but this one definitely could rub some people the wrong way.
