I literally don’t say that. That’d be dumb. “Love UMs or leave!”??? Definitely not my way of thinking. Want a bigger crowd for UMs every year, not smaller.
Literally my whole “slay the jade” thing is really just trying to understand what you guys’ like about em/what you miss about em/what changes you’d like, just with a metaphor of “the jade” be some beast I’m hunting, because that’s what I want. To understand what the fuck the Bort’s going on about.
Also to meet y’all and rock the fuck out together at shows.

We want better, more exploratory jams. They take the easy way out with chugs or they’re just out of ideas, more often than not.
They still have it in there though, see DBK or Crooked One from this year. That’s what I know they’re capable of doing. I know that’s not possible every single song, but one excellent jam per show would be nice.
And when the chugging started I was all about it, I really enjoy metal/harder rock, but eventually it started to seem like a crutch
A big reason for why the Biscuits pulled me isn’t only their jams, it’s their energy. They’re having a blast and it’s infectious. Umphrey’s seems lost.
Also when I say ‘we’ I mean me, I dunno what everyone else wants
I imagine a lot of us are in the minority. A lot of people on FB/Nugs are saying the band is tighter than ever right now. Idk man I just wish they would take some risks and not play it safe all the time, it’s boring. You think I fell in love with Umphrey’s because of their compositions? Hell no, it was because of the wild jams. Then I started to appreciate the comps. But I want the jams man.

I’ve read things along this line around here.
See I like this. Like another user said, their quicker paced sets n shows hit pretty well. Differently yes, but still found enjoyable by others.
Both can be and are true. I also find value in both the chug chug and the 20min prowler (yes I know length doesn’t matter, trying to quicken a point).

I agree 100 percent with this. Am I chasing songs, yes. But I would rather take a bad setlist with quality jams over a great setlist and hardly any jams.
When I first starting seeing them in 2014, it was unlike any band I have seen (yes I was lucky to catch some really good shows that year) and it wasn’t their songs that did it for me.
It’s almost like the band is getting stale and after seeing them 39 times I wouldn’t travel to see them at this point. In all honesty, I would rather travel to Spafford and that’s because I know I’m going to get at least one sick jam.

Also by the way I’m not a miserable fuck. Any time I go see them live I have an amazing time. What it is, is that they used to play shows with songs I would routinely go back to (shows where I didn’t have attendance bias). That’s my gauge of how well the band is doing.

Sorry, I didn’t mean you specifically. Just a typical type of response fans of a band may give when other fans dislike the direction they’ve gone in.
For me, there’s two main aspects. One is their songwriting. I got into UM in large part due to their dual lead guitar sound and progressive compositions. There are exceptions, but much if not most of their new music does not feature these elements. Almost everything’s in 4/4. How many songs since Mantis feature a Bayliss solo? Lyrically we get songs like Always October and Whistle Kids.
The other aspect is their live improv and approach to setlists. Especially lately, the improv sounds disjointed like they aren’t listening to each other. The concept of Jimmy Stewart was to create songs in the moment. Most of their improv these days doesn’t rise to that. As for the setlists, almost every “>” now seems like they just peter out instead of actually segueing from one song or jam to another. They also lack the creativity they once showed with things like song list shows.
I don’t think you’re my enemy, I’m just tried to respond to the views you’ve expressed to hopefully explain why some may feel differently.
