Getting to more of that essential UM out of JaJunk and KaBump. JaJunk fits in the proggy side of things, with the classical references and all (chopsticks is a classic). Kinda fits that “if it’s not S tier than idk what is” tone.
KaBump fits that jazzier side of things and is an older tune that needs to be played more often, 2 jam instrumentals ftw.
IC is a great bouncy riff in the beginning, I get people not liking the chorus but i can look past that. Then it comes back around to that bouncy “be-do-bop-be-da-bop-baaah” riff as a great launchpad for improv.
I kinda use the composition and improv potential as a guide to grade
Kabump is big time S tier in my book. Love that jazzy shit and it will forever be connected with the GOAT UM jam (2/9/10)

Everyone can vote with whatever metrics they want. I’m voting loosely based on the following:
- 50% raw composition (not just studio also because on songs like Booth and ItK I treat the false jam intros as composed sections at this point)
- 30% jam vehicle
- 20% how the song has aged (which encompasses how “over it” I might be if it’s played too often, how happy I’d be to see it pop up in a live set, and generally how my preferences have changed on that song’s genre in terms of their whole catalog of songs)
EDIT: to expand a little more on the last one I’ll say this…I’ve been curating a “favorite songs of all time” playlist in my itunes for nearly 2 decades now, which way predates my caring about UM. As I listen to albums I’ll add songs to that playlist and as of like 10 years ago nothing gets removed. It’s currently like 800 songs. The UM songs are the following: Anchor Drops, Walletsworth, Intentions Clear, Divisions, End of the Road, Search 4, Conduit, Uncle Wally, Prowler, 2nd Self, Cemetary Walk, Words, Nemo, Puppet String. When I first listened to them I put them in there because they were all S-Tier compositions. But my tastes have changed, also I’ve listened to all of them at least 100 times between that playlist and live shows, so all that impacts how I’m voting in this thread.
I’m telling anyone that will listen the Spires jam from the beginning of that show is arguably one of the best bliss peaks the band has played in their career…

Jakunk is never a jam vehicle I hope to see. Too many 4min rock jams, and on top of that it can have some of Jake’s most overindulgent soloing.
Wow, I’m curious what versions you’ve caught, you unfortunate soul. I can’t remember the last time a Junk jam disappointed me.

I haven’t seen or heard a very good one in a long time either.
I’m honestly surprised, I don’t listen to UM all that often but it’s the song I see live that always delivers.

Song itself kind of a funky Phish knockoff. Love the jams tho so still A tier
I’m really not the hugest Junk fan either, but I still gave it a B. Asheville 2022 and Birmingham 2021 versions were definitely highlights of their respective shows (what an insanely manic fun jam that Birmingham one is.)
