It’s more like it’s hard to tell who their target audience is. They’re all over the map and I think it has led to their decreased popularity.
Not every song needs to feature technical wizardry but that is kind of UM’s core competency. It’s always surprising to me how many of their songs in recent years don’t show off their chops at all.
Decreased popularity among 15 dudes on the bort?
Hasn’t there been a drop in ticket sales since even before Covid? They aren’t competing well with the Gooses and Twiddles and Billy Strings of the world.
Billy Strings is a much more popular artist playing a different genre of music. Not sure how that’s supposed to compare
I have no idea I was expecting you to hit me with some #stats to back up your statement
This has already been discussed on the bort. I’m too lazy to find stats.
Don’t care for the VFX at all but overall a pretty decent song. Pretty sure this will grow on me.
Who is Umphreys target audience? Honestly, not a troll question.
It’s easy to say that they are not a “jam band” anymore but rather a rock band that jams sometimes but then we’ll see songs like Easter in Quarantine and Xmas in Wartime and No Diablo and new singles like this and I just honestly am curious what they’re going for. They’re all over the place but as kickinit said I guess they always have been.
Whoever wants to listen to them. The idea of a band targeting a group of people is weird to me
People who do do copious amounts of drugs. People who used to do copious amounts of drugs, stopped, but still like them.
I don’t see how that is weird. They are so business minded that we complain about it all the time. I’m sure they have a target audience and consider stuff like that as they make decisions on what to release, where to tour, etc etc.
I feel like you’re conflating their studio identity with their entire identity.
They are almost two separate bands: live and studio. I see it as the band having fun exploring different sides of their craft. When they are in the studio, they go all in. When they are playing live they give the music more space*
* relatively speaking, yea they don’t improv as much as they used to but they still improv multiple times every show
Lol they are still a jam band
Would they admit to that? Is that how they would describe themselves if you asked one of them?
The last album was all instrumental.
I don’t mind the lyrics or the amount of singing. The song just isn’t great. It’s fine, but I probably won’t listen to it much.
“Improg rock” brah.
I’d be ok if they never wrote songs with vocals again, tbh
They never liked that label even when they jammed more than they now do. They play 2 set shows with a different setlist every night, a handful of jams every night, regularly tour with other jam bands, and play jam band festivals. They’re a jam band.
Kinda surprised that people are surprised that they’re all over the place sonically. They always have been. This is a band that had Plunger and Bullhead City on the same album
