100% agree on all of this. I think two things are true.
and I guess my initial point is that there were a ton of casuals that went for Jake. I know many. Not super into UM enough to go to shows now. Not a majority or anything, but there is certainly a subset
As a comparison, I dig Panic a little. But I’d have no interest in a show without Jimmy.
I can’t relate because I’m not really a guitar guy and TBH I was pretty indifferent on Jake. I didn’t like his Bobcat Goldwaith singing style, and his reliance on chugs and the same teases over and over. But then again, i enjoy Stasik.
dude at the farmers market recognized me from a previous market as the “umphreys fan” and asked what I thought about Jake leaving.
buddy had no idea about the allegations. Told him he could probably get the full scoop at r/umphreys but if he wanted the full scoop plus hot dog and pizza photos to join the bort.
A bright eyed bushy tailed Vols was so excited in his junior year of college to do the two night Umphrey’s run.
Ryman baby. Like 5 rows in front of the band. So spun. No worries. Little did he know this would be the best UM show he’d ever catch. Blacked out on 3/30 but luckily that wasn’t much. The Thin Air and Whitehouse Rd was tight tho
Looks like I’m doing a crazy thing. Drove back from fort Collins this morning. Heading back for the show this evening, then flying out tomorrow for a week long work trip to Toronto.
A few days late on that Joel interview, but it’s kinda interesting that it sounds like they’ve got a batch of both new songs they’ve been working on since starting the 5-piece format and some that go as far back as when Kris was in the band
It was also cool to hear him talk about the tour with moe. and playing a little bigger venues than they might otherwise. I only caught the New Haven show and I’m not sure if it was any more filled out than when I’ve seen either band there separately, but it’d been a while since either had played there
I listened to most of 9/25 yesterday (after listening to a lot of summer 2014 lately) and one thing that stood out is the jams are in the same key for 10 minutes. Jake UM would always have little B sections with moving chords for a bit before going back to the groove. They haven’t really tried to do that yet without him. I also miss the part-composed stews they would drop in jam sections. It was probably easier to do those when they had more time to practice new material and weren’t relearning their entire catalog, but I hope they bring those back.
Off the cuff list of my top 10 (unordered) favorite/standout UM jams, heavily biased toward stuff I was at, so next time I say something is on my top 10 I can refer to this list and see if I’m wrong
I don’t know if I’ve ever told anyone this maybe it belongs in the confessions thread but the night before the last Caribbean Holidaze I was in Montego Bay coked out of my 21 year old gourd undiagnosed manic depressive and feeling really horny as stimulants tend to have that effect on me and I ventured down from our preAirBnB vacation rental to the street with bars, shops, etc. and I bought a bottle of Jamaican rum then I was accosted by a couple sex workers who basically forced themselves on me to solicit services and I agreed to let one of them give me head in an ally around the corner. I couldn’t get it up because I had major coke dick so I let this Jamaican sex worker briefly slob on my flaccid penis before I finally gave up and told her I was over it. I didn’t have any cash on me at that point so instead of paying her I gave her my iPod and the bottle of rum I had recently purchased. Pretty sure I had nearly all of 2008s and 2009s UMLives on there I wonder if anyone discovered them once she pawned off my only valuable on me at the time haha. I would start with February 2008 if I were them. The new cover debuts in the encore slot each night was a nice touch.
