Random, Spontaneous Thoughts about UM (Part 1)

While you all are enjoying 2010, I’ve been reveling in the 2005-2006 era, since lots of videos from that era have been posted recently (check out the “In the Vault” thread). I’m watching Tabernacle 10/14/05 video this morning. Man, Bright Lights used to GROOVE. I’ve gotten so used to the modern versions and it’s never been my favorite song, but man, it sounds so much better like this, when only 1 guitar is playing at a time and it’s not everybody hammering away at the same riff the whole song. I realize Bright Lights has almost completely died in terms of play count the last couple years, but if they bring it back, I think they’d do well to listen to this version.

I love this show so much. My personal favorite from last year. Still listen regularly

I think I heard in an interview with Joel that it logistically wouldn’t work due to their loud stage volume. Compared to Phish you’ve got 2 extra players, but the music is also more loud and aggressive overall. I’d imagine mic bleed would be a huge issue trying to mic a piano for Umphrey’s

There’s just no way. Maybe if they played Bayliss’ dream show lol.

Joel electric rig with the grand piano effects is the best is going to sound, that’s what’s most important. The logistics of taking a grand on tour sounds like no fun for the crew, Chris, and the smaller stages they play on. Keeping it in tune when you’re traveling through different temperate regions of the country sounds like a nightmare too.

I’m sure i just repeated a ton of what’s already been said, i didn’t really read through the thread.

Has Joel ever played a grand live? There’s got to be some venues out there that have house grands. Would be amazing if they did another full acoustic show with Joel on a grand as just a special one off show.

The only time I can think of him playing any house equipment was the FOH Jam during the 2008-09 NYE run when he played the Auditorium Theater’s massive organ.

Yeah this is more like what I was thinking. I think most pianists rent a piano in the market they’re playing as opposed to traveling with their own.

He played an upright piano at the Toads acoustic show in ‘09

Watched most of 12/28/13 last night. Such a great show, big energy. Jajunk Deeper and obviously Triple Wide are all huge

That 3x is such a go-to jam for me regardless of era. This is such a great example of Jake doing everything right and taking this jam over the top. The YouTube video is in constant rotation.

Yeah I knew that 3x was awesome but the Jajunk and Deeper are definitely not to be overlooked either

I thought the closest may have been the 3/10/06 Chicago Theatre show on a baby grand but I’d have to do some digging in the wayback machine. I swear this was brought up on the OG Bort.

I was at that show and forgot there was a baby grand. Still love that poster. No wonder we all love sheep so much:

Looks like I was wrong on the Chicago Theatre show. I found grainy footage of the August jam peak and does not appear to be a baby grand. I swear there’s a Chicago show where Joel was on a baby grand. Gah! Need to figure this out now or if my brain is truly fried…

He was up in the balcony on the house organ for the FOH jam on 12/31/07 at the Aragon. Not sure if that helps

RIP: UM playing legit venues in Chicago.

How sick are these bros?

Love the effort put into that

Oh shit nice, thanks for the heads up. It’s not like I haven’t seen a million of these shirts anywhere. The boys always pumping out original content.
