3/20/14 Padgett’s. Also just want to throw it out there that yes I was the genius who coined the term Pook’s Picks
Yes for the record it wasn’t me who coined it LOL.
Thanks for the Padgett’s
While I do love the contributions of the whole Bort, I wouldn’t mind a couple Pook only curated playlists. I also suggested to maybe team up with a couple Borters and put together a themed playlist. Like a Northeast/Northwest Pook’s Picks.
I am loving these by the way so I hope you keep them coming. I listened to the Underdawgs one driving around all day today and caught some jams I don’t ever remember hearing.
Well I’ll keep that in mind as far as only picks from me. In all fairness though you guys have given me some stuff that I completely forgot about! I’m glad you’re enjoying that though. I have a lot of fun putting these together and sharing them.

Haunt and Ghetts
Does anybody want me to make a playlist of strictly intros?
In seriousness I remember some show where an intro was played mid-show and with a jam… I think Nipple Trix at some point?
Oakland ‘14 maybe?
EDIT - they did Tango Mike in the middle of the 2nd set and did No Crying in MX in the middle of the 1st set
Just listened to the playlist while packing/cleaning the apartment. Thanks so much for putting this together @Pookells! The write up was great as well. My highlights were the Kitchen, Kabump and Wappy. Gonna check out that Hangout ‘11 show in its entirety now
You’re very welcome! Like I said I like doing these. It’s helping all of us, including me, rediscover some forgotten or never heard UM gems
Really enjoying this playlist!
I’ve listened to this 10/29/15 Search 4 at least a dozen times in the last 2 days
I was at that show and that’s the first time I’ve relistened to it. What a jam! Need to get back into the swing of spinning shows I was at because I’m definitely missing out on other jams. Hope to discover more through the upcoming editions of Pook’s Picks!
Never heard that OB. It was fire. Bayliss also makes a Kris Myers cocaine joke at the end.
“He will vacuum your house for you” lol
I’m so glad y’all are enjoying these! I’ll try to get Volume 2 out before the weekend - or over the weekend worst case
Yes, I have emailed Chris Mitchell and Nugs. Thanks.
Thanks pal! You’re the best
Vol. 2 will be out tomorrow. I made a couple of last minute changes and resequenced some things. Working on time stamps and track by track commentary. Sorry it didn’t come out today like I had hoped. I promise you though that it’s a great list!
I have also started up Vol.3 which will be all picked by me - borrowing @gatroe ’s suggestion. Goal is to have that out early Tuesday morning
@gatroe

Pook’s Picks Vol.2, as promised!
Tracklist:
ITK (2.27.08 Des Moines, IA) 18:50
- Starts off with a Roundabout intro and kicks into ITK. Improv length is 11:05 and kicks in at the 5:11 mark before going back into ITK proper at 16:16. Spacey, psychedelic laid-back and jazzy all at once, it’s one of the all time ITK greats! Thanks to @OSUmBeaverPhreak for the suggestion.
Conduit (10.16.13 Burlington) 14:36
- You guys were bringing this one up so how could I NOT put this on here? Improv length is 9:57 between the 2:45 mark and the 12:12 mark. They get into a chug chug start at this point that progresses into the DnB jam at the 5:20 mark before going spacey around the 6 minute mark. The jam alternates space and rock before going back into Conduit proper at the 12:12 mark.
HBB (2.12.12 Baltimore) - 20:41
- From one of my personal favorite 2012 shows. Improv starts at the 6:48 mark and has a laid-back almost Linear-like vibe that transforms into a synthy Pink Floyd vibe at the 13:37 mark. This jam continues down a trippy path and gets back into HBB at the 17:23 mark. Improv length the here is 10:35. Excellent version here and the jamming is quite satisfying! And plenty of wooing by the crowd lol.
DBK > Sweetness > Kula > DBK (3.25.09 Tulsa, OK) 32:54 for the whole segment
- Great segment that @OSUmBeaverPhreak suggested. The jam starts at 5:47, gets electronic and back to DBK at 7:02 mark. Then back to jamming again at 8:04. This jam is patient, bluesy and jazzy. The funk subtleties show up around the 10:22ish mark, sliding back into DBK at the 15:45 mark. Sweetness and Kula are exactly what you would expect and then the trip back into DBK happens. Total improv time is 8:58. Good segment that completely warrants a listen.
Much Obliged (10.10.09 Peoria, IL) 12:55
- another @OSUmBeaverPhreak rec. This is one of the more unique sounding MOs. Starts off pretty chill; not as hard rocking as other versions. The jamming kicks in at 4:01. Nice little dance party here and kicks back into MO at 11:22 while keeping the dance party going.
Improv time is 7:21. I really dig this version. It’s unique and who would expect a dance party in MO?
FF (6.02.17 Columbia, SC) 10:41
- One of my favorite FFs from one of my favorite ‘17 shows. Dub dance party alert at 2:15! And then comes the trippy-ass synth jam at 4:01 before chilling at around the 9:00
mark. Unfinished version. Improv time is 6:40.
GYM (RH) (9.22.12 Louisville, KY) 15:01
- Remember the days of jammed out Milks? Cue to the improv at 3:31 that stays for the rest of the track. Oh, and Magner alert!! Nothing like a Bisco sit-in, right? Great Milk! Improv time of 11:30
Blecho (10.13.05 Asheville, NC) 20:14
- 2005 had some great improv and this is consider one of the top tier Blechos from that year. This version blends jamming and Blecho until the 7:10 point and becomes a full stew that becomes lyrical at 17:25. Improv time is 13:14. Great version that shows off the 2005 jamming style!
Padgett’s Profile (3.20.14 Salt Lake City) 16:48
- No pussy-ass encore! Jamming kicks in at 5:44. Starts with a Stasik-led bass jam that becomes a dance party, rocks out and gets patient before getting into a middle eastern metal jam that sounds a bit like a Remind Me preview and gets back i to Padgett’s at the 15:14 mark. Improv time of 9:30.
Enjoy this one!
Good Morning Bort!
Here’s a playlist for your Tuesday morning. Like I said last week, this would be all selections by me. And kudos to those of you who get the reference on the playlist name! I got to dig a little deeper into the UMLive repertoire to make a playlist of great UM that falls under the radar on the Bort. Tough job but somebody’s gotta do it!
Nipple Trix > Booth Love (9.8.11 Brooklyn) 14:00
- This show opener from Brooklyn ‘11 starts things in a funky direction. This Booth stays within the song and doesn’t venture out into any jam territory, although the last minute has a nice funk mini-jam. This Booth is also unfinished. I put this on here because I was listening to this on SiriusXM Jam On while driving through LA back in ‘16 and thought it felt perfect driving through SoCal in the summer with some funky UM whilst enjoying the summer breeze and palm trees.
Miami Virtue (3.22.12 Seattle) 12:53
- From my first show! Seattle ‘12 is associated with the Set 1 ending Smell The Mitten - and nothing wrong with that since it may be the best Mitten they’ve played. However, in the 2nd set lies this Virtue that doesn’t get discussed. It kicks off in usual fashion and then the dance party stew starts at 5:25, and evolves into a dance rock jam at the 9:35 mark and continues for the remainder of the track. A more accurate description would be Miami Virtue > Jimmy Stewart. There’s no other way to say it - this Virtue is fucking badass! But quit reading my rave over it - just listen to it! Improv time is 7:28.
Got Your Milk > Alex’s House (4.18.12 Fayetteville, AR) 24:02
- On nugs, this is only listed as Got Your Milk and they forgot to mention Alex’s House here. It’s all good though - this is quality stuff (right here). The improv starts at the 3:30 mark and starts teasing Rhiannon at 4:12 before moving in a Bisco-esque jam dance party direction at around the 5:13 mark and changing into a more UM-sounding dance jam at around the 11:00 mark. Alex’s House teases start at 14:00 mark before seguing into Alex’s House at 14:23. This Alex’s doesn’t get into any improv, BUT…this may be the most energetic, lively Alex’s I’ve heard them play. Jake and BB have a shred fest on this version, with the song ending at the 23:08 mark. Rest of the track is BB banter. Seriously good shit (right here)! The songs, not the banter!
GYM length - 14:23 with an improv length of 10:53.
Alex’s House - 8:45 no improv
Eat (7.17.15 Asbury Park, NJ) 12:07
- I don’t understand how this version of Eat didn’t make the cut for HOF ‘15. Eat kicks off in it’s usual fashion and at the end of the first part of Eat at 1:27, Stasik plays this wicked distorted bass line that evolves into a nasty metal jam that goes Middle Eastern metal at 2:28. This jam is dark, evil, heavy and just fucking nasty! Were they listening to Tool backstage while Lettuce was opening for the them? The world may never know. They go back into Eat at 8:25. Now this is how you EAT! This may be one of the best Eats they’ve ever played. Song ends at 11:17. Rest is crowd and brief BB banter. Improv time is 6:58.
Remind Me (8.11.17 Raleigh, NC) 14:29
- I haven’t heard this version mentioned before, so it qualifies for this playlist! Pretty standard beginning here that leads into the improv at 3:08. This jam goes into dance funk mode in no time flat but then shifts into a Soul Food I-ish jam around 6:00. Joel decides to channel his inner 70s Stevie Wonder at 7:20 and lead the jam until it takes a more rock direction at 9:00, returning to part 2 of Remind Me at 9:41 with the ever-so-familiar chug-chug riffing and the spooky Joel keys. Solid version here! Improv time is 6:33.
All In Time (7.01.11 Des Moines, IA) 19:44
- I don’t know what’s in the water in Des Moines, but UM kills it every time they play there, and this ‘11 show is no exception. AIT starts off in the usual fashion and then Stasik leads the jam at 2:56 that somewhat resembles a sped-up version of Faith No More’s “We
Care A Lot” before going into a danceable rock jam at 4:14 that lasts for the remainder of the track, bringing the improv time to 16:48. They weren’t fucking around with this 2nd set opener! This isn’t an unfinished version by the way - they finish AIT in the encore. But…we’ll keep it here as an unfinished badass version!
Ocean Billy (3.10.13 Bozeman, MT) 18:05
- Never miss a Montana show - or so I’m told! This Billy kicks off in the usual fashion and BB and Jake trade some tasty licks just before a drums segment starts at 6:33. A minute later the rest of the band chimes in with a somewhat jazzy sounding jam that gives way to more rock sounding jam at 9:30. There are moments here when it sounds like 2nd Self is being teased, although it had been played earlier during the 1st set (Billy is in the 2nd set). The jam then goes into a heavier direction at 12:08 before going back into Billy at…I shit you not…13:48. The guitar interplay between BB and Jake intensifies, giving the second part of Billy a heavier feel. Everything wraps up at 16:51 with the rest of the track being the crowd and BB banter. Solid Billy for the MT crowd!
Similar Skin (08.19.16 Knoxville, TN) 14:21
- SS starts off in standard fashion and wastes no time with the improv, starting it at 2:41. This jam starts with a laid back almost jazzy guitar riff and transitions into a more danceable style that’s almost Daft Punk-like, if I was to give a band reference, and then takes on a more rock vibe before going back into SS at 9:14. Song ends at 13:56 with an improv time of 6:33. Nice version here!
Utopian Fir (3.23.10 Amsterdam) 18:44
- Some Jam In The Dam UM? Hey, why not? This Fir starts in pretty typical fashion and starts jamming at 2:55. The jam starts with a brief chill bass and drums part which leads to a “99 Luftballoons” tease and then gets back into a laid back yet funky groove, heading back into Fir at 9:40. This 2nd part of Fir becomes complete spaced-out reggae, as to be expected in Amsterdam. This version is pretty bad-ass. Song ends at 18:08 with an improv
length of 6:45 The rest is about a dedication to Jon McL. So…I created the dedication LOL, as you’ll see next
Ain’t No Fun (2.19.17 Asheville, NC) 4:25
- no improv needed here. We’re going hip hop encore up in this bitch!
The Message (8.15.14 St. Louis) 7:38
- instrumental version
Regulate (3.17.11 Hollywood) 6:46
- the last part of the hip hop trio encore!
I hope you guys enjoy this playlist. I had so much fun putting this together! And this actually might be the best playlist I’ve put together yet!
Today starts my 5pm-6am shifts, so I don’t know when the next playlist will happen. For sure it won’t be this week but I’ll try to get something out at some point next week. I stayed up all night to get my body clock adjusted so I was able to spend extra time perfecting the sequencing with this one. Anyhow I’m crashing shortly, so have fun listening!
