NYE 2024

Are we talking about weather and whether heat or cold sucks more? Is it my turn to once again promote the perfection of room temperature Bay Area? Heat and cold both suck! Accept neither! Lows of 55 and highs of 73 for life!

California is the most overrated state in the country. Hot take or Fact?

You cant say that if you live in the midwest.

Nah. Outside of the desert and I-5 in socal, California is amazing.

Yeah it suuuucks having access to high paying job opportunities, skiing, beach towns, mountains, wine country, the desert, and comfortable climate.

If all youā€™ve experienced in CA is LA I can forgive you for having that take.

Yeah but the cost of living is so high that the only way to survive is to have access to these jobs. One of the caliā€™s biggest downsides

You canā€™t say this if you live in the Appalachias

You mean arguably the most beautiful part of the country? A rainforest with a diverse ecosystem full of rivers and waterfalls, incredible views and hiking. Pretty much a big adult playground. Yeah sounds awful. I should move to bumfuck IL

The Appalachians are beautiful. Tweaker country but still better than 90% of the Midwest.

TBH it isnā€™t the area. Itā€™s the people and whole ghost of Confederacy that gets me. Iā€™m man enough to admit that down there is probably my go to esthetic, minus PNW.

the proper response is ā€œnothing in the midwest is overrated so weā€™re experts on the topicā€

ask somebody from Freddyville, Iowa if California is overrated youā€™ll find out if theyā€™re a liar or an idiot real quickly.

I guess thats fair. Some of the people suck. But people suck everywhere. Especially in small towns. This applies to the midwest too.

Our people suck too

Thatā€™s why slope work in Alaska or fixing shopping carts with my kitties in Nova Scotia is looking lovely nowadays.

There have been some studies recently that take into account median earnings vs cost of not just rent but also transportation and the results would surprise you. Places like Cincinnati and Buffalo net out to, based on median (better measure than average), take up a larger percentage of peoplesā€™ salary on housing+transportation than it does to live in places like San Francisco and NYC.

Car dependency is an overlooked financial burden. But ā€œ15 minutes citiesā€ are some form of totalitarianism becauseā€¦convenience and happiness is bad?

Not my finest shit talk. Not like itā€™s Florida or Nebraska.

I live in LA, it was a blast living here in my late twenties and early thirties. Due to the cost of living (among other things) weā€™re moving back to the Midwest (WI) next year. Yes, there are some definite pluses (aka, the weather) but itā€™s not the best place to raise a family, imo. Iā€™d like a house where I canā€™t hear my neighborsā€™ conversation.
