So unbelievably stoked. What time do you think you’ll get there on Sunday?
Still figuring that out but thinking maybe get to the lot around 4, hang for a while, and get in like 30 min or so before doors
Maybe this should go in the Confessions thread but
What’s up with this band, seriously? I don’t know anything about them except they’ve been around for a while, every album is way different musically and one of them has a song for each mode, and somehow they have invaded the jamband world. Where should I start? Do they do crazy segues or big improv in their live shows, hit the usual tropes? Is it mostly metal live these days? If they’ve been around for like 10 years why are they suddenly so big, was there some watershed moment or has it just been a gradual organic build?
Nonagon Infinity
Crazy? No. But they → a bit
Nice mix of metal, jazz, blues, psych
I think the community was hungry for something new and their commitment to their fans, prolific writing, mix of genres, and general fun attitude was enough to help them blow up
Check out bootleg gizzard on Spotify. It’s a lot of their live shows. The red rocks 22 has incredible moments. The dripping tap, magenta mountain, Gaia, KGLW, boogie man Sam are great places to start
@LandLandNever , honestly like Jolson said, just throw on Nonagon Infinity and get pitted. Also a good case for I’m In Your Mind Fuzz or Laminated Denim for a hamband fan (very kruatrock at points though, don’t get me wrong.)
Actually. I’ll say just listen The Dripping Tap, followed by Nonagon, and see what that does.
I think we’re also getting there around 4, but getting straight in line. I got there at 330 in line the past runs and got center of rows 19-22, but it fills in so fastly. I’ll text you, would love to say hi, and maybe chill between sets on Monday
Ideally, by seeing them live. This is the type of band that brings so much energy live, that you can’t really understand from just listening to albums.
They do some segues, and have improv, but not what you would expect from a jam band. They don’t go type 2, but they have some great jamming regardless.
It’s definitely not mostly metal these days, but you can expect metal for like 30-45 min of each show.
I think they grew a lot in 2017 after releasing 5 incredible albums, and because they started jamming a little more. Then they released another 5 albums in 2022, and started jamming even more. Their energy and stage presence is amazing, their banter is funny, and the songs are great. People finally caught onto it. I honestly think just people having the years to see them live and see that kind of energy is what sent them over the top.
But back to where to start, it depends on what you like. But 2017 and 2022 were great years with so many albums. Just see what clicks with you. But I will reiterate, seeing them live is 100% necessary to understand their massive appeal.
Edit: I’ll also just add that imo mind fuzz is the most necessary album to listen to pre 2017. There are some other great ones too, but this one is in the upper tier of albums.
Damn, yeah I know the line started nice and early last year but Im just not sure I want to spend 2 hours in it. Well see. Definitely hit me up though, lets def hang at least on monday
@LandLandNever - Everything about this post rings true IMHO, but bottom line is see them live if & when you can.
From my personal story/experience, I had begun to dig into them in prob ‘15 or ‘16 after hearing chatter from people I typically agree with on musical passions. One of the best parts of that is how a few of my friends are so very different in where biggest passions lie. When I heard excited rumblings from people whose tastes vary so much, it def caught my attention. While listening to albums, I obviously enjoyed some material more than others, but It was certainly enough to keep ‘em in my radar. First time seeing em was Pabst Theater in 2018 & I walked out of that show pretty damn floored. They are an absolutely incredible live band with a seriously dynamic and full live sound. They’re so tight & have so much energy, it’s quite infectious. I wish I had this band in my world 20-25 years ago when I could’ve dropped everything and followed them around for awhile.
Omnium Gatherum is also a reasonable place to start since it’s not as thematic as most of their other albums so you get more variety. Its kind of like their Bottom Half
God damn, I want that
Jay Weinberg Reprise. Sick.
Band is on fire
Anybody see a @dtbar1 cameo on the strean when Amby was walking through the crowd singing?
lol that’s funny as hell I did not
Lol that was so awesome. He walked down like 4 people away from me. They are just the coolest band of all time
This site is helpful for diving into their catalog.
Great article. Possibly another electronic album in the works? Or at least speculation
