2006-09-29 - 18 minute 2nd Self
There’s some slop throughout but the bounceback is still great. I really like that the peak tacked on at the end features the same Bayliss riff from one of my favorite Jake runs (2007-02-28 Crooked). Jake locks in and shines on both.
A few years ago I tweeted Joel that they should put some improv in 2nd Self again and he seriously couldn’t remember that used to happen

I thought it was just a one-off, I don’t remember improv in 2nd Self ever being a thing. I think there is also a 2007 OOO with improv, too, but I can’t think of any other versions ever with improv.
I guess I just knew of that one and assumed it happened a bunch. I got them to try it (I think it was Norva 2017 or something like that.) Didn’t go very well
Yeah I’ve only heard sporadic instances.
Yeah, never gained traction but they’ve tried it a few times mainly in 2005-2007 I believe. Probably cause most of them weren’t great like Ops pointed out with that Norva attempt. Yikes, just listened to that for first time. The good jams seem to come out of 2nd. 2005-09-03 is the only other decent version I can think of.

There was a big jam out of 2nd Self at Red Rocks in 2017, IIRC. Not sure if that counts, as I can’t remember if they returned to the 2nd Self theme, or just jammed from it after the end, or simply left it unfinished and jammed. I just remember the fact that the jam caught me way off guard.
