Jake to miss 2/26 show

40s, Glory, Reso, Tribute, Space Funk Booty, Utopian Fir, Blue Echo, Ninja (not sure about this one), Last Man Swerving, Roulette

Guessing most stuff he wrote with BB would still be on the table.

The wording on the initial announcement is interesting: “He is taking a necessary leave of absence for personal reasons. We love him immensely and support him completely.”

To me, seems like this could include legal issues beyond the band.

But who knows. Me thinks more will come out in Mexico from attendees’ proximity to the band.

This fucking sucks. I hope Jake comes back and is healthy.

To make matters worse, I voluntary chose to attend a damn near sold out Goose show in a 9k cap venue. I hate this timeline

I didn’t even know that it was this much. Looks like Baylor better brush up on Q*Bert and Bob.

Yep, i think a lot of times people forget Fir came from Utopian Sky

I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to play whatever. The limitation to me is what they couldn’t or wouldn’t do without Jake’s vocals and/or second guitar.

Yonder had to stop playing most of Jeff’s songs, but then he died and Ben suddently decided it was fine. Maybe they got some sort of blessing, or maybe it was an unwritten agreement, but still.

Spafford stopped playing Jordan songs.

Sts9 didnt lose much of Murph’s material, but not sure he was ever the sole composer of some of those songs.

Edit: there has to be some non drug band references people know about, but just comparing them to other bands in their bubble.

I feel like the jamming ultimately would be fine with just the one guitar but the compositions on the whole don’t sound nearly as good without Jake. A lot of their songs are built around 2 guitars. They’re playable with one but definitely missing a lot of juice. I wouldn’t expect them to keep playing Jake songs if he’s gone

They still play both nurses which were Myers songs

Night Nurse started as a jam, though, right? Day Nurse was Kris Lounge Groove, so you got me there.

If UM doesn’t have composer credits, it’s no different than playing a cover song. They wouldn’t “have” to stop playing anything. I’m sure you can find unlimited examples of old bands continuing to play songs despite lineup changes.

You are probably right, but its not like they are changing a regular member. Its one of the primary song writters, and most of those songs were not originally written for Umphrey’s McGee.

Pink Floyd comes to mind. They kept playing Waters songs after a rift, but those songs were written for Pink Floyd.

Waters fucken wrote Animals almost all of The Wall. Pink Floyd would’ve kept playing those songs if Waters fucked Gilmour’s mom and killed Syd.

Agree, but also wouldnt be shocked if there is a difference when you write/release something as a band, as opposed to when you bring in stuff from a previous band.

Edit: like those are Pink Floyd songs. These are Ali Baba Tahini songs.

You could argue Utopian Sky because an UM song when it became Utopian Fir, or Aster Heights became an UM when it became Last Man Swerving, but the roots are still from ABT.

Time will tell but I really don’t see them playing songs like Ringo, Mulches, WWS without Jake. Anything that he’s the primary vocalist on I kind of expect to fade away. Maybe Booth Love and 40s Theme pop up from time to time. Just my hunch. The only song they played in March that he normally has a solo vocal part on is M2M and he only does the chorus.

I was just trying to be fair and make sure i wasnt arguing in bad faith

100% this.

They can play all of those songs for sure - many of them just wouldn’t work or suck without jaco

I might be the minority but some of Jake lead vocals, isn’t really a great loss, if that ends up being the case. I’m sure Scotty can handle Ringo.

It has to feel weird playing a song about your ex-friends dead cat.
