For all the flaws of my Catholic education, I’m extremely grateful to have been exposed to the progressive humanist aspect of the faith. Empathy is really all that matters. Unfortunately some people have absolutely none.

fully agree, we grew up pretty Catholic (my dads high school was a seminary in NW Indiana, hence the fighting Irish love) but my dad started the long transition to atheism when I was bout 15/16. Its led to some fantastic conversations since my dad went from one end of the spectrum to the other.
The CCD, mass, etc provided a great lesson in empathy, morals and intention but it was pretty clear to me early on that you don’t need organized structure to help your community and at the end of the day how you treat people is what matters most.
