To keep with the football analogy, it’s like going from an All Pro to a Pro Bowl alternate. The latter is certainly still good, but not in the same league as the best of the best.
In terms of chops idk what tier Scotty is on but he deserves a lot of respect for coming in so quickly, knowing the songs and keeping pace with the momentum UM had going. He’s been a fan for a long time and he “gets” the catalog and the sound. There are a lot of ways that they could have lost steam after losing Kris (see the Biscuits) but it was an extremely smooth transition. Losing Jake has been a lot more disruptive unfortunately but they’re still doing the best version of what’s possible IMO
Scotty was also an injury fill in. Marlon is gelling faster than scotty
marlon has exponentially less work to do. it’s the biscuits…basically four on the floor and easy groove changes. there is next no overhead when it comes to learning the songs lol
HDPF has a jam section in 5. Allen may have only played one beat but there is plenty of room for intricate drum parts.
Coincidentally, the more complex, harder for drums songs are being played better than they have in decades.
okay so thats a single exception…maybe there are a few more exceptions. umphrey’s songs are infinitely more complex by and large, and thats the rule

Yes because 1.0 biscuit songs are weird as fuck and have a ton of parts. Also marlon had to learn how to invert songs.
FTR he played like four songs as part of one show while Kris was out. He wasn’t a regular fill in like Atkind or Trucks were.
