Did UM cover another Sturgill song shortly after release?
They started playing Call to Arms shortly after A Sailor’s Guide to Earth came out. They also do the Sturgill version of In Bloom, which is from that same album, when they cover that song.
They dropped Get Lucky initially in Austin 24 hours after the single was released. RAM came out the next month in May that year. I just remembered muttering they covered Daft Punk tonight spun out of my mind on 6th Street post show repeatedly to anyone that would listen to me babble.
Has UM done the Sturgill In Bloom more than once? I just know of the one show around 2017-2018 where they also teased Nirvana In Bloom during Fir
I liked Sturgill as a far right militant on Righteous Gemstones
I had tuned out towards the end of the first set apparently while -borting on my phone rn posted up on the couch post dab letting the Adderall and Red Bull (sugar free) do its thing but starting head bobbing to the music and was like what fucking song is this this sounds tight and lo and behold it was the Phils you recommended earlier itt. I like the way you Umphreys brother.
(Also thought 2x2 jam was dope.)
I thought they started always playing it that way after the Sturgill version was released, but i could easily be wrong. Havent truly been “checked-in” to all things UM in over a decade.
Edit: saved people the time and went back and listened to the first few seconds of the last few versions on nugs. I was wrong.
I’m glad you are easing up on the sugar Mike, that shit will kill you!
Was that oct 2016 phillymore? 10/21 or something? One of my favorite 3 night runs.
this second set is so good.
Phil’s is very pretty. It’s built around a solid Stasik groove and then patiently finds it’s own footing before entering a beautiful landing gear before the return back to Phil’s.
Push the Pig is nothing special but it had some sweet alien soundscapes and the lights were A+ in the venue for this one.
Attachments comes out of the gate hot with that chaotic Donkey Kong type groove. They find a quick fierce little groove towards the end before finding themselves in another beautiful piece of landing gear.
Night Nurse is the low point which is funny because the crowd was going apeshit. That crazy train jam is one of those UM moments that reminds me of the Good Will Hunting scene when Will is yelling at the professor “do you know how fucken easy this is for me?” The crowd was going bonkers and the band looked like they were phoning it in. Not a bad Night Nurse, just felt disjointed and then relied on the typical cover jam crutch we’ve all seen too much.
Make America Fuk Again was wild. Didn’t even dance or nod my head, was just shaking my head in disbelief. When they went into Don’t Bring Me Down I began convincing myself that I took too much L and I had hallucinated them playing Sturgill. As quickly as Bayliss started shrieking, it was back to the smooth sultry sounds of the Sturgill cover to which I confidently realized I just saw a debut of a mashup containing an unreleased banger and an ELO classic from 1979. Mindfuck, the outro jam has some extra meat on the bone too.
Wife Soup was an appropriate ending after that segment. Who doesn’t love ending a show with Soup.
Jack Straw with Scotty crushing vocals and Ryan playing Misson Control (Phil’s bass from most of the 70s) was really cool to see and you could feel the energy in the room. There were a couple old grandmas in tie dyes in the seated section and they looked like they were having an out of body experience. One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen at an UM show.
spent the hours post show slamming Denny’s and smoking spliffs in the courtyard hot tub to wrap up a phenomenal two nights of UM. would definitely return if the west coast run includes Solana next year.
Is this legit or naw? Figured there would be a million articles covering it ala when Trucks played Tiger @ The Beacon a couple weeks back.
Edit: That’s sweet, forgot Stasik posted about it on iG. That’s a cool opportunity they got to play em
Legit? There are a ton of Jerry guitars around. Jake has played one at red rocks. I’ve seen Warren play wolf with a symphony. Tiger sold the day before Derek played it for 11.5 million, that’s why it was all over the internet. It has to be the most expensive or close to it guitar ever played at a concert.
