A Saturday show with The Haunt, Atmosfarag, Lie, Wormbog && The Fuzz is remarkable to see. Fantastic dog selection. Funny pairing up Always October > NN; I’m sure if they jammed it out the segue could work, just 2 polar opposite songs… smells like Pony.
Nice to see I know A Little pop up again, good cover to keep in the rotation
I was there. Just being honest - and it pains me to say about this band that I love and have followed all over the place for a decade…but it was the most underwhelming UM show I’ve experienced. Setlist didn’t stoke me at all. Maybe they were pacing themselves for a four night run, or jet lagged on the heels of Morocco travel. Admittedly - I lean to the more ‘rawk’ side and I live for the times when the band is cooking hot and Jake takes it all to new levels. Had a bit of that in “Remind Me”, since that’s built into the song. But the rest of the jams were very tame, slowish tempos, and just overly laid back, IMO. Hope it was a one off…but my recent experiences over the last couple of years, I must say, is that the band doesn’t feel like it’s interested in firing hot like it was in the 2014-2018 timeframe. It was also the smallest venue and crowd size for Dallas in the last 5-6 years, and I’m wondering if it’s all related. My opinion - they need to revisit the current formula, and bring the rock quire a bit more than they have in the last few gigs Ive seen. The face melting rock/jams seems to be when the crowd responds the most/loudest…and I think that’s what sets them apart from other bands in their peer group. I know they can’t do that for every song, obviously. But man, please boys, bring it a bit more. One thing I will say - Kris Myers was on fire last night, and was giving 110% all night…that guy is a monster. The rest of the band honestly wasn’t matching his intensity. Just sharing my opinion, and I don’t mean to be disrespectful. I love UM and will always support em.
Probably one of my least favorite types of UM jams too… I don’t mind listening to hard/classic/cock rock on its own, but just don’t want to hear UM doing it as improv that often.
This second set is indeed a complete throwaway improvwise to an alarming extent. The transitions and dog selections are nice, but the loss of focus turning into a hoedown jam 1.5 minutes into the first jam of the set (Little Gift) definitely sets the tone. All improv this set is a wandery mess
Fortunately, the first set is quite a bit better, including the second excellent version of The Haunt in a week’s time (what is this, 2001?) Yes, it turns into a standard dub jam to start off, but the real hook is that it’s a bounceback with an uplifting “B” section that gets firier every time they play it and culminates in a nice climax. The Billy jam is solid too with a few minutes of excellent Bayliss/Jake interplay (chugs can work well when Bayliss is playing something interesting!) Below average overall, but these moments are worth checking out.
