Yea now that you mention it… it was def the Waylon/Willie version of Cowboys
My educated guess is they keep I Know a Little in light rotation and ditch the rest. Maybe Dont Think Twice during a future acoustic show and obviously Call to Arms isnt a new one
As my first UMBowl experience, this was a blast. I’m not the biggest fan of country music but when you’re getting 6 sets and 8 hours of music, you just chalk it up to getting to see a unique experience they’ll never do again. And I got Bullhead out of it, so there’s that Sam Bush is so good! Having the pros up there with them for the whole set really legitimized things, though you could tell they did their homework as well. Great vibes all around, and the Kaw-Liga improv was notable (as was going almost psychedelic out of 9 to 5?)
The second set was really not very good - felt they were torn between squeezing more guests in vs. trying to squeeze in enough UM songs given that the other set was just Mantis. Transitions and flow were sloppy throughout, though the Tinkle’s jam was good until they neutered it. Grace did a fine job on Lenny though - classy ending to the set and a good transition into set 3.
The Mantis set was super fun. Having voting elements involved was interesting. I think they wanted this to be a cross between an S2 and a traditional improv set. It was certainly better than their last few S2 attempts have been. My favorite parts of this set though were the organic ones, especially the drum and bass jam coming out of the second split. I was disappointed “brown” didn’t get picked by the fans, but the uplifting jam with rainbow colors ended up being above average.
Cannot say enough good things about the Ryman, which is good because the show was over 4 hours long! It appears UM managed to sell a lot of last-minute tickets at the reduced price, so I really hope they get to play there again. Very excited for tonight and hopeful weather doesn’t mess with things.
RTT please. I do wonder if the Mantis set will be 1 track or if they’ll break it down it chapters.
That said, i wish they’d do a full improv set more often. Treat it as something special, like how WWE does with the big 4 PPVs. I for each night of UMBowl, 1 for the NYE run, and 1 random concert a year gets a wildcard improv set.
I streamed from the couch today and purposefully didn’t check das bort because I didn’t want to know what was played, plus I knew there would be some jaded negative opinions about the show and didn’t want that to ruin it for me. I thought all sets were well done, fresh, unique, and had plenty of awesome improv.
I liked the country set. Didn’t bother listening to anything else. Generally speaking, I enjoy UM cover gimmicks and outlaw country tunes, so I was definitely a little biased.
