My set 1 notes: Staircase (first part rushed to peak but really good second segment) > 2nd self (goes type 2!), wide open, linear (Jake does a really cool galloping chug thing they run with and bayliss has an epic solo) > well wishers, day nurse (drums, no type 2), Kashmir (vocal modulation sounds really good in person)
TLDR: staircase is the highlight but nothing here was super noteworthy other than I liked how the new sound guy did the vocal modulation for Kashmir
Fun set but agree nothing crazy
Nothing to be bitter about, cause my currency is lost in the exchange.
Set 2:
Puppet > looks (good jam), silent type (you put a silent type jam in my silent type), 2x2(understated Joel and Kris jam) > end puppet, much obliged (experimental jam that they had fun with but didn’t translate well) > wizard
E: come closer
First set looks like my worst nightmare on paper.
I was pretty disappointed with last nights show. Drove an hour in each direction for a Saturday show so I was expecting a little more oomf.
Staircase - fine I guess.
2nd Self - first time seeing it after 30 shows. Highlight of the first set for me
Wide Open - I don’t think I’d heard this one before. Something I noticed about a lot of the songs in the first set was that vocally they were sort of tuneless, this most of all
Linear - Ive always really liked this song with its icy Police/80’s Rush vibe. Better but nothing I’d come back for
Wellwishers - as they were playing the intro, I could have sworn it was No Excuses. Nothing against this song but just sort of forgettable
Day Nurse - ugh.
Kashmir - personal preference, but this song has been covered to death. Straight ahead
After the first set, I hadn’t really gotten any of what I came here for. Second set I kept waiting for it to take off, which it did for Looks, but otherwise felt lackluster. The MO jam fell flat and they just sort of gave up on it before going into WBG. WBG felt like too little too late. Encore whatever. Personally I’m anti mash up and again Come Together has been done to death by every band. UM has so many unique covers in their bag, so I don’t know why they trot these ones out
Anyway, I’m a pretty big fan but after last nights show and last years Bellwether show I’m at the point where I’ll probably just skip them next time they are in town
Everyone has their own tastes in what they like about UM. As someone else already stated, UM is a weird band to like if you don’t like covers/mashups. Its big part of who they are.
To each their own, you have knowledge. Yet you seem to forget each night is different- from style variance to dog selection. Sometimes ya miss, can’t let it discourage ya shrugs
I agree, every night is different and I LOVE 95% of their cover choices. The mash up thing is just a personal gripe. But it’s two shows in a row where things just didn’t ever really achieve liftoff and I’ve seen enough shows to know how capable they are.
Get in the van, man
Come closer is awful, and especially awful as an encore so you are justified in your annoyance. If you only see one show a year these days the likelihood you catch a straight up heater is pretty low. You may get a jam or two that get you there but it sounds like you didn’t get that either. Just gotta keep on keeping on!
I ain’t getting in any van. No further than 20 min from my abode until they think about what they’ve done
Yah seems like SD has gotten the better show the last 3 runs. I didn’t think yesterday was a bad show even though I don’t like the song choices for the most part. But I’ll need to relisten.
Without listening to the show, I’m gonna guess that they ran out of gas, after all the miles they’ve put in, in the last few weeks. They old and i think this is the hardest they’ve gone in a while.
To add, it looks(jo) like they gave a 10+ min 1st stew in Staircase, jammed 2nd self. 4 songs in a row with improv to start the 2nd set. Ya can’t say the effort isn’t there
They’ve played some awesome shows this year. It’s unfortunate the last two shows in two years you’ve seen haven’t been strong, but taking your ball and going home feels extreme if you like the band.
They were totally out of gas. Producing quality improv is hard enough as it is, let alone the 17th show in 24 days.
That’s not even taking into consideration the MKE>DR>MT travel run they did in 4 days, which would be tiring for anyone
