Set 2: slacker, booth > floor, crooked one (good jam that got a cool extension but could have gone longer) > life before wartime (ac/dc jam, no Chicago), out of focus (bayliss jumps the gun at one point)
Also I got a setlist, I’ll upload at some point if nothing else gets uploaded
The Seasons jam was the highlight for me. I’m not as familiar with the newer stuff and really enjoyed Out of Focus. Good crowd. My guy Todd was in his element during Help → Slip. My 59th show and I realized the last time I listened to Umphreys was my last show (a year ago) so it was a refreshing experience.
Help > Slipnot! Sweet cover choice, great bustout! They should dust off Crazy Fingers while we’re at it
P.S I dig the Mantis love in this S1. Interesting placement for Slacker, I like that idea opening up S2. If WS has to get cut The Crooked One is the correct choice
So they both agreed that it was a very impressive display of musicianship and said they’d see another show at that venue, but also at set break they were both like “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a band member that felt as useless as the percussionist here” and I was like “I get what you’re saying but there’s some times he’s perfectly in the pocket for for the song as written” and then one of those moments came up later in the night and they were like “yah his addition really tied that segment together”
I think if the songs were more og umph they’d have gotten more down
Edit: also I was keeping an eye out for you at Santa Ana. Did you make it there?
Exactly. Andy has a lot of underwoven parts that pick the pocket of the jam or the composition v well, then there are other moments where he’s center stage (#5 being a fine example), well said.
I gotta say, the times I missed Andy the most was when Kris was out & Andy would jump on the kit. You notice when he’s not there, he’s so good that unless you’re listening to him specifically, he can get lost in the BBQ sauce. As your ears mature you start to appreciate the great onions of layers of subtleties he adds to the sound. We love Andy, too
This Crooked is probably the most interesting jam from the past two weeks to my ears. Dig the textures, dig the Joel piano line that they always come back to, wish the peak was fleshed out a bit more but think it’s a nice flowing jam. This Seasons is solid too.
