Below are the Listening Guide Summaries for 2020. Obviously this year has a huge asterisk next to it since so few shows were played. When I first envisioned making these summaries (pre me making my first Listening Guide post) I had hoped there’d be far more of a sample size, but we got what we got. As of now I plan to continue making listening guides through 2021 so hopefully that summary post is more interesting.
To be automatically eligible for a year-end summary (this year) I arbitrarily decided that a song needed to be played at a minimum of 3 shows. If you see the list below and say “what about __ song” then it either only got 1 or 2 plays, or got 3 plays but one was the Wrapped in the Round shows (see below). I think the latter only applied to 3 or 4 songs. If you want something specific just comment and if it got 2 plays I’ll make a summary, if 1 then just seek out that show.
Unfortunately, neither of the Wrapped in the Round shows are in here because they aren’t on nugs and I don’t know where they’d be streamable. The VIP single song set of Front Porch was turned into a visualization however since mp3 files were delivered to viewers. I hadn’t posted it previously because I wanted to combine it with the others but I felt it’s worth posting here since 1) it’s part of 2020 2) it got the most “Jam” treatment of any song this year and 3) Front Porch didn’t get enough plays to warrant a summary on its own.
First off, this is unbelievable. Thank you for doing this. Unfortunately won’t get the recognition you deserve bc this is a biscuits board
I wonder if you move 2x2 to the bottom of the list (I.e. not the first hidden details tag) is it still fucked? If so then not sure. If not then it seems some glitch for first list item and you could just put an empty spoiler tag at the top ?
This is so awesome. Its super cool to look at the charts and see which tunes really do look the same every time they’re played and others that are just all over the map. Great work man.
Ah so vamp is the special flavor of the song for that show. Neat
Original: An Umphrey’s Song, played as per the studio recording (more or less), should a studio version exist.
Vamp: Improvisation over the backing song structure
Jam: Unique improvisation
Cover: Another artists song, as popularized by them (more or less)
Planned Jam: An element of an original song that is absent from the studio recording but is a frequent element in live renditions.
Banter/Noise: Crowd noise, band discussions/announcements, etc.
It’s like I probably could’ve explained it but I couldn’t. I just had assumed it was like an extended solo by a member or something during composed parts
Yah, I really debating just using “Type 1” and “Type 2” but I thought that could be less intuitive based on who’s looking and I didn’t necessarily want to use terms that (I think) originated in Phish forums
EDIT: I could also probably clarify “Vamp” slightly better and say “Improvisation over the original song structure”
