The show is up on nugs. I really enjoyed the groovy, playful nature of the show. Of course attendance bias comes into play, but I thought the band was very dialed in, tight, and did a good job listening and getting creative with the jams. Not anything mind blowing, but some very enjoyable dancy fun stuff. Heavy teases all night and a bit of banter from Bayliss, who seemed to appreciate the rowdy crowd. At one point someone handed him a sign advertising an open an mic night at a different bar the next night. He then tells a story about the night Stasik and Bayliss met at an open mic. Bayliss said he “happened to be playing The Rainbow Connection, by Kermit on banjo and for some reason that made Stasik go, that’s my guy.”
As far as jams go, Conduit had a really patient build with plenty of call and response between Joel, Bayliss, and Stasik. Bayliss built the jam to a nice peak and he seemed to be making a statement they were there to play. He’s such a riff-based melodic guitar player and really knows how to insert creative lines into his improv that the others can respond to. It made me miss Jake a lot less than I thought.
Hiccup is not a bad song, but probably not a song anyone has on their wish list. Bayliss continues with the patient major key build to start and the jam leads to a lego style JO with lots of talk back mic action. The 2nd B part leads to a bassline that sounded very familiar but I can’t quite place. Then they take it into a half time slow groove section with more great listening and space and slowly work up the jam to a peak where Bayliss hits a cool melody line that they build up even more. Then, modulate up (I think) and get the tempo back to common time, briefly, and Bayliss keeps riffing. Then, everything is brought down into the transition to Half Delayed.
Banter from Bayliss after half delayed and he says he’s never been to Park City, which I thought was surprising. All In Time is always great to see and Joel covered Jakes absence surprising well. The jam starts with some funky bass lines from Stasik with Scotty grooving hard. Then Joel comes in with this crazy keyboard (or moog) effect that is kind of similar to a Jake guitar delay effect. The All in Time jam was going somewhere and went from super funky to sparse drum and bass with some great hi-hat and snare work from Scotty and then started to build again with more cool Bayliss riff’s only to get cut short by Stasik insisting they drop into Nemo. That’s all right, I’m a Nemo fan and Bayliss ripped the solo.
Suxity jam starts with more Scotty/Stasik funky goodness. Joel comes in on the organ and he and Stasik lock into this cool descending riff that Bayliss catches onto and the first two minutes of the jam are driving. They all drop out abruptly accept for Bayliss with a little funk rhythm moment ala Cory Wong. Then we’re back in full into some great moments with the band catching some hits together with Joel on the organ, great stuff. I was thinking it was a tiny lights tease but I’m not sure. Joel is leading the jam on the organ with Stasik filling the space with some great runs underneath and then it’s a key change (I think). They speed up the tempo and get weird, it’s great. Jam ends with a near perfect transition to 2nd self. Love that tune.
2nd self is fairly standard, well played, and Bayliss tears it up again. Scotty is solid and catching the perfect amount of call and response from the soloists, never getting in the way but keeping things interesting.
Bayliss laments the loss of Christopher’s (sound guy) mustache and makes the crowd turn around and scowl at him, then dedicates I Ran to him. I Ran closed the first set and the crowd ate it up…dance party.
Attachments jam was based on another funky bass and drum groove. Joel on clavinet and Scotty doing some interesting stuff with the tempo and syncopation. They drop into another lego style JO with talk backs that doesn’t quite work. I blame Stasik not catching the cue. Bayliss saves it a little and layers on some more cool riffage that leads to some great moments with the band listening and reacting well. Stasik is playing around with a descending line under Bayliss’s riff and the jam doesn’t really go anywhere until Bayliss starts teasing Funky Town and leads the band into 3rd Stone From the Sun. Then they flawlessly execute a key change and drop into Fussy. @matt and I were stoked! Standard Fussy but it was awesome and well played.
Educated Guess. I enjoy this song because I like the ska-style feel. Scotty was bustin’ out the chops on this one and the jam was a Joel led loud moog solo.
Front Porched! I thought of the bort talking about this one recently and chuckled. 1st jam had an old school feel and was a short bliss style jam. They transitioned to Den after the middle section which I was a bit bummed about but the Den ended up winning me over because it was a seriously epic dance party and everyone in the room was goin off. They hit a quick change in the middle of Den that I don’t think I’ve heard before but I could be wrong, I’ve never paid close attention to the form of the tune. They drop down to half time jamming and explore some themes for a bit before Bayliss starts teasing No Quarter, crowd eats it up then they work back into Den. They kick back into Front Porch from Den and the 2nd jam is the lyrical stew with the supposed cryptic message to Jake that some @Random_Ass posted.
Staircase had a great section that modulated down and led into these cool hits that the band was playing together with yet again more great soloing, riffage and call and response. They finish the jam out with a RATM tease? and Staircase is unfinished, I think? Might have been my favorite jam of the night and was a great way to finish the set.
I’m not a big fan of Young Lust but it was fun to catch. They jammed back into all in time to finish the encore like @matt called it. All In Time ending featured wine bottle slide guitar, top gun tease, a shout out to Park City in the lyrics, teenage wasteland tease in the final guitar solo. Great show, fun night.
