2018 NYE run was pretty dang good. Back half of 2018 in general was a good warmup for the GOAT year of UM

Iâm just combing through old setlists right now. I find it bizarre that on NYE 2019 UM played Mitten, 13 Days, a Philâs with a 10+ minute jam, Headphones & Snowcones and Night Nurse, all in a single set. I canât even imagine them doing that these days in a normal show, let alone on New Yearâs Eve of all nights. Whatâs funny is that a different night of this same run was billed as a ârarity showâ so youâd expect that theyâd played their obligatory rarities by that point. But in fact Iâd say that one set has more rarities than either set of the ârarity show.â

Early 2018 has some fire shows as well. 1/13, 1/25, 1/27, 2/1, 3/7, 3/14, 3/15, 3/25âŚthose are all extremely fuckng good UM shows w/ top shelf improv.
Gonna have to revisit some of the monster 2018 jams this week. Thinking of shit like 1/13 Draco and 3/15 Night Nurse.

12/31 CWII is one of my favorite 2018 jams.
I saw a ton of great jams in 2018. 5/17 Hey 19/AIT, 2/17 Cut Off, 1/25 Mantis, 1/26 FF, 12/30 Slacker, 12/28 Higgins, 12/29 2x2⌠I can only really remember jams from shows I was at though. I need to go back and check out some highlights of the full year.
Still 5/17 set 2 is definitely up there for top sets of UM Iâve seen. Iâd even put it over most of my favorite sets of 2019.
Btw, IIRC I liked 1/26 a lot more than 1/27 as far as those Philly shows went. Neither was quite as good as 1/25 was though
Also even though the Beacon shows were pretty average, the Beacon 2018 Fir > Memories of Home is an awesome segment. That Fir is definitely one of my favorite versions Iâve seen.
Just saw Sultan, Jake, and Stasik hanging. They might legit be boys. I asked Ryan why they wonât jam anymore. Sultan called me a custy. Weekend=made.

Iâve got a new theory that UM has been mixing up their typical arrangement of It Doesnât Matter and adding a new jam section for the purposes of using the song (with 3 jam sections) as a future jam set vehicle, perhaps at UM Bowl this year.
Throughout 2020 the song consistently had 2 jam sections
They started mixing it up in the last 3 versions (hereâs a preview of 2021):
The first two of the year are normal 2-section takes, but notice on 6/25 there are 3 fairly distinct jam sections. Then again on 8/6 they attempt to go for 3 again, but a missed cue by Stasik at ~3:30 meant they didnât really take the first section very type 2, but still fill in with another 2 whole sections. Then on 8/21 they commit and give us 3 solidly distinct jam sections that were well choreographed among the band.

IDM should have one jam and remain unfinished IMO. I think itâs one of those songs that loses steam from having multiple jam sections.
It would be goofy as a jam set because the jams would continuously return to the same theme every time.
I think Fir would make their best vehicle for a jam set as it could have jams in the wildcard slot, main jam slot and outro jam slot, and they could all be at different tempos so itâs not too samey
