I literally just logged in to post this. But, in the jam and cringe thread :joy:

Wait…Kid A was viewed as a masterpiece from minute one.

If you don’t like this album, you’re unhappy and don’t like to have fun.

I had to reply. Fucking cringeworthy to hear AFAF compared to Kid A. Our scene is delusional.

Didn’t read through much of this thread but want to echo some previous comments that Escape Goat seems like it will definitely be the top jam vehicle from this album. Stoked to see how that one develops in the live setting.

The first time I listened through I was like Dafuq is this; but after listening through a few more times it’s grown on me a bit. Is this the Umphrey’s album I was thinking we would get? Not exactly, but it’s also not as bad as people are saying I don’t think. Sure there are a number of songs that won’t work great in a live setting but then again I’m pretty sure every one of their albums has some type of that element to them. I remember when mantis came out some people on the old bort thought some songs were pretty poppy too (M2M definitely comes to mind) hiccup and escape goat are my favorite tracks. Am I the only one excited for some new tunes at shows? Im hoping with new music to inject into shows will mean more exploratory jams. Wishful thinking? Guess we’ll find out.

I like that take…

Still have yet to listen to a single track, but we plan to make time to do so at some point soon here.

Sure, I’d be happy to hear Hiccup or Escape Goat after they play The Haunt I’ve been chasing.

To be fair, you have to attend shows in order to be chasing anything

I was chasing it before my 5 year hiatus.

At the end of the day, I love Umphrey’s for the technical elaborate instrumental music they nake. Not their voices. Not their lyrics. Especially not the serious emo crap.

This album just is going to add more crap into their live show I don’t want to hear.

But do you like Kid A?

I kind of like this record after sitting with it more. I can’t really listen to a jam band studio album for a band almost 25 years into their career expecting it to have no filler. How About Now sucks but aside from that every song in the second half is at least good, and a couple are very good. The first half is too up and down and adult contemporary for my tastes but I can at least see the live potential in a few of the songs, especially after seeing IDKWIW and Small Strides get improv recently. Like most of their records I’m not going to be sitting around listening to the studio album a ton, so my feelings on this batch of songs will probably be more clear a year from now when we see which ones they play the shit out of and how willing or not they are to extend them.

Yeah I think the album is fine. I will say I have been casually coming back to it a week after it’s been out and I don’t think I’ve done that with any of the previous albums. Could also be because these songs haven’t been played live yet. There are certainly some horrendous lyrics and annoying Bayliss but jam bands never release good studio albums (besides Sweet Oblivious Antidote)
