Ya its off of the Sopranos. Peter Gunn/Every Breath You Take. LTP- 1.26.2018 (Philly)
Didn’t seem like a planned occurrence
Holy fuck Full Frontal
This is a deep cut. I love this one. There is a 2015 version that is my favorite
That was cut from Thursday, nice to see it pop up
Shocked to hear them playing it tbh
Love this song. Caught that one in 2015. I didn’t realize it was a song until I saw the setlist the next day.
Didn’t think I’d seen this but I did during the 2019 NYE run.
Very familiar bass line in this Remind Me jam
That’s kinda cool, full band drums got Farag cheezin’
Yeah that was cute
bayliss vocals have sounded really good lately. really enjoyed the his vox on Africa, in particular
I’m so surprised to see Jake with just a digital stomp box, he’s such a vintage analog nerd.
Bear Down
We think they maybe tried to go into fenced in then played mail package instead. No 2x2 and fucking played Africa instead of Higgins
Yo, looking good @Serac. Did Dean make it out?
This was a weird show. In my opinion the 1st set was pretty strong but the 2nd set got Saturday nighted a bit to the point I’d probably give the edge to Norva. I certainly thought the HBB was choice. First jam was typical extended spacy build; second jam was type 2 with a fun proggy riff, if cut a bit short. I enjoyed the short uplifting jam out of Uncommon, and just the fact they started with 3 very rare, abrasive songs at all was fun. Scotty did a good job with Eat, especially the end.
The show actually began to go off the rails slightly with Concessions. The composed parts were played as well as ever, especially the ending, but tonight was the first time they elected to open up a jam spot in Concessions, and they actually opened 2, one immediately preceding each reggae section. Both jams just degenerated into covers/common teases (Stranglehold gonna Stranglehold). Concessions is already a very long song as is, a good song that I would not personally shorten (possibly a hot take there), but a very long song. If you’re going to jam in the middle of it to make it even longer, it’d be best to make those worthwhile.
2nd set was definitely a Saturday night. Short dance jams in Tinkle’s and Goat, with Goat definitely being the more interesting of the two IMO (loved the melodic progression), and lots of teases, covers, and short songs otherwise. I did think the robot > Wish segment was very well done! Scotty wearing an NIN shirt and then NIN showing up was a fun touch.
This really sums it up, but I feel compelled to try to break down all my thoughts and feelings.
Summary
Before the show even started you knew this wasn’t good for the band considering half the venue was blocked off. I think I’ve only seen that part blocked off once. I would guess ~600 people were there, if that. Not to mention, the Fillmore is already the most hated venue in Charlotte.
Starting with Uncommon was awesome. I was so hype, but they couldn’t lock in. The setlist had > fenced in and you could tell there was some confusion with that transition. I fucking love mail package, but that’s when I started looking around thinking this show doesn’t feel right. No one was singing or moving. As Kev said, 3 rareish abrasive songs in a row to start the show was cool, but it just wasn’t hitting right in the moment.
Concessions is long, but the end hits hard and will one day be a big ol emotional singalong. I think we are years away from that though. Beautiful lyrics.
“And we all put faces on
And the old mistakes we’ll always own
It’s the only place with you where I belong”
Everyone loved the NiN cover. I had no idea what was going on, but Scotty was crushing it. I was happy to see some crowd energy. Then ESCAPE GOAT. I’m like here we go… crowd about to get down. It was fine, but why did they not turn that into a huge dance party?!!! It was so odd to me.
If they played this same show another day of the week, at a different venue or a different city, I do think it may have hit different. Phoned it in with fucking Africa encore when they had plenty of time for a fat Higgins even with the hard stop.
Main takeaways
-
They didn’t think the night through in my opinion. It’s a Saturday night in a big city, Labor Day weekend. A lot of people are traveling, weddings, bbq, etc. I assumed they would take this to heart while writing a setlist, but didn’t seem like they did at all.

The vibes in that venue were off. Truly one of the weirdest concert experiences I’ve ever had. I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of people who didn’t know what they signed up for. The lack of crowd enthusiasm and excitement was so strange. Of course I want new people to get into umphreys, but going back to point 1, that setlist writing isn’t going to get the new people in!!! (Except maybe the covers/cover teases)
My friends were giving me shit after for saying this, but I really do think I made Stasik’s night a bit better. In a room depleted of energy, he saw me jumping around side stage throughout set 2 and had a huge smile and then at the end, he made a point to walk the setlist over to me. Bands feed off crowd energy and they weren’t getting shit last night, so it felt good to give them the love the deserve.
I was doing laps around the perimeter of the venue all night. Couldn’t find 1 spot to settle in. Even with all my bitching and emotions, I’m pretty sure I had more fun than anyone in that room!!! I had a blast and my heart is full because I got to see so many friends. Dancing with @haiz is the fucking best. We were both roaming around and then would end up in the same corner. Missed you @racecar. Awesome finally meeting @kev347!! Great to see @Serac, @Deaner, @Random_Ass and @Professor_Shuapop. Bort rules. Love what I receive from this community.
Then we went to a local spot after and
Summary
They were easily one of the worst cover bands I’ve ever seen, yet they were so fun. The drummer couldn’t drum. I swear my rock band experience would have made me a better drummer. The 2 female singers were decent, but man they need better talent around them. Songs they played include: Mr. Brightside, Love Shake, Misery Business, hit me baby one more time, Panama, Uptown Fuck. They were alllllll over the place. We were cracking up all night. Then snuck into bb after show for 5 seconds.
The end.
