I think the resolution from Indy should be in the discussion. Maybe attendance bias but that shit crushed live.
4/24 has two strong joty contenders in ITK & attachments
That was a fun show to listen to. I could listen to shows like 50-100 times a year.
Thanks!
What are the 2 Jan ones? Domino?!!! Crooked?
Yes, but even that DBK is pretty hot. 2nd jam section is untzphreyâs at itâs finest.
Omg forgot about the DBK! Yeah that was great too
That run is all about the domino for me lol
Hot damn that Mitten!!! LFG
They got right down to business. You canât not dance to it.
Of course itâs that time to overreact and overrate this weekend. Hereâs my initial offering for the JOTY list
8/30 2Ă2
8/30 Fir
8/31 Staircase
8/31 Ocean Billy
These 2 segments are great as well
8/30 Out Of Focus>Philâs>Out Of Focus
8/31 It Doesnât Matter â Professor Wormbog
Thoughts?
My takes:
2x2 No, I liked it but just as it was really getting good they went away from it. Still though a 20 min 2x2 in 2024 is never a bad thing
Fir Yes, a solid 10 mins of heat
Staricase Maybe? I really dug it personally but I dont think it can compete with the top tier jams of the year. It DOES belong on the Outstanding Versions list for the song though
OB No. Didnât really do anything for me.
Yep, Fir is the only one I personally think could be considered. Friday improv put Saturday to shame IMO. Great run overall though!
I havenât really heard that much but I feel like the 7/4 Pure saturation, 8/23 Staircase, and Philly brklyn bowl (?) hiccup are my favorites. Also the penns peak Silent type w/ the 1979 jam.
Not JOTY worthy maybe, but def should be on âOutstanding Versionsâ. Last nightâs Seasons
7/4 Pure Saturation

I do love that 8/30 2x2, but Iâm a sucker for that dark moody drumânâbass groove right into the minor power chords.
And that Out of Focus â Philâs transition is really wild. They donât really do that stuff anymore so it is great to hear them really pull off a super creative segment.
Iâm about to update this list for the last time, and I observed something that was overlooked, or at most-mentioned in passing. The Crooked One was played on 8/25, which wouldâve been the day after @UMFree had passed. While it was standard, minus the MITA that followed, I would like to include that onto our list for the year, if nobody has any objections.
Other than that
8/30 Fir
Ive been making headway listening to a lot of these, right from the start of the year. I havenât gotten to everything from the summet yet, but a lot of them including the very recent stuff from late August. And there are 2 that really rise to the very top for me.
4/24 Attachments
7/4 Pure Saturation
In similar fashion both of these have 3 distinct sections, the 3rd being driving rock peaks with explosive guitar work. Attachments is a solid 14 minutes of improv, which is massive by todayâs standards, and I love the way they quote the 1st jamâs melody theme late in the 2nd jam- thats just such a nice touch. I just really like the melody they use. The 3rd part (the peak over new chords) is shorter than Satchâs and brighter. The Saturation took me a few more listens to put on the pedestal, but it too has 2 different grooves that are more driving and the peak is longer, heavier and darker- my favorite kind of UM. And the drop into one of my all time fave UM covers⌠:chefâs kiss:
Tl;dr both of these jams fuck supremely and you should listen to them. 2024 easily best year for improv since 2019. Fact.
