I’m probably projecting but it felt like the band dialed it up a bit with all the talk about financial pressure and declining fanbase.
One of my favorite shows attended, loved the focus on flow and jams and seeing where they can go. Always October a welcome surprise, didn’t expect such a stellar version
I liked the Attachments more the 2nd time. Real good stuff. Don’t think any one section was mind blowing, but as a whole, it was great. 100% in JotY consideration. Think I liked the first section and then the latter half most.
I am a bit bummed looking back at all the promise of live music returning after COVID. Seeing a packed Red Rocks in June 2021, then fast forwarding 3 years to last night to a lightly attended Pageant show on a beautiful day in St Louis (in August!) is a bummer.
Still loved the show, my 10th show at the Pageant going back to 2005. Hope I get to see #11!
Through set 1 and I thought this was easily an B+, maybe A- set. 6 songs, Always October had 2 filled out jam sections, Ringo was charged up, Stanton is a beautiful tune, and the Night Nurse to end it is an absolutely fierce peak. And who doesn’t love a GITV opener, my all time favorite opener for UM. It may not have been all over the place musically, mostly stayed heavy, but the jams were totally on point.
This Attachments is an absolute beast. They just don’t generally jam like this anymore in 2024. Jake picking up new themes on the fly and the whole band running with them, then running back to a previous section whenever they feel like it. Incredible stuff.
Favorite show of the year? I certainly think the Ringo > Stanton > Ringo segment is very well done with the focus between three short heavy jams transitioning in and out of Stanton as well, Night Nurse’s peak is sizzling, and Always October definitely lives up to that song’s full potential.
I was not aware always October had potential but im not gonna lie this one was good. They need to do stuff like this extended intro more often because it sounds great.
The first set is almost a little too crunchy. The heavy jams at the end of always October and throughout Ringo > Stanton > Ringo lack variety a bit. Band still sounds really crisp though.
I struggled with wording on that sentence. I wasn’t either and was hoping it was gone forever But I know that on top of it being a bottom 10 terrible song they’ve also tried to jam it before and it’s gone nowhere, so it was exciting to have a jam not only not go nowhere but also be a show standout.
~8 mins in to this Girlfriend Is Better (the jam just before the drums portion) is reminiscent of a segment from the 11/16/06 Making Flippy Floppy. Made a note of it at the show and just listened back to confirm. Love that ‘06 Louisville show a ton despite screaming girl on the recording.
I’m guessing this jam’s been repeated other times, just thought it was mildly interesting coming out of 2 different Talking Heads covers almost 20 years apart.
