Not that anyone cares but I forgot about this Sunday update for ya’ll.
I woke up face down on the couch at 5 AM to a bowl of soggy Honey Nut Cheerios sitting there sadly uneaten. My “wife” woke up and found me ITK draining the milk from the bowl and asked me what the hell I was doing. She got a small laugh out of that before going back upstairs to bed.
The solo at the end of this Wide Open is amazing. They completely crushed this version. More please. The Blue Echo jam into it is also short but really really fierce and good. Not sure I would have wanted it to be much longer, even, unless they changed to a second theme.
The encore 3x in this show is notable because Bayliss does something I’m not sure I’ve heard him do before - he essentially reprises the “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”-ish theme from the Little Gift improv earlier in the show. It’s a really cool effect in the middle of an otherwise throwaway jam. They were feeling artsy this show. Speaking of Little Gift, it, 2x2, and Draconian all have interesting themes to offer, and even Plunger and Pig are great shorter, more predictable fare.
I’m glad the band fed off the rowdy First Avenue crowd energy and were able to deliver a show like this rather than pandering like they sometimes like to with covers, Gulf Stream, Den, etc. I somehow bet the energy didn’t drop in the room too much either during some of the more challenging moments in the second set. I hope they remember that. Very good show.
