2022/07/15 - The Stone Pony - Asbury Park, NJ

By tweet times, looks (jo) to be around 16 minutes. Solid.

Yeah New Wings peak is hot and that southern blues rock jam is very reminiscent of some '06 Umphreys.

Second time through Escape Goat and it is fantastic, great linear dance jam that evolves through some major and minor key grooves. Never really peaks but the New Wings jam makes up for that.

I actually think I like the New Wings more than the EG. Love those kinda UM jams. Really solid show in general. Pure Saturation is kinda a disaster straight through

After listening to this show and last night, I’m thinking of adding 2-3 shows this year while they’re hot. That may be the best compliment I can give.

I too prefer the New Wings to the EG but think the UM world needs both these types of jams to make it go round. Roctopus and even Hourglass are very good too.

Wasn’t Rocotopus just I’m On Fire?

Nah, there was a solid little jam after it

TLDR the posts, but is the best Hourglass ever? I think maybe there was one other with good improv, but can’t remember for sure.

Also, is this the best post album release debut of a song ever for them?

Can’t claim to know all the hourglasses with improv, but I really liked it

I’ve got Redacted and Orpheus accounts still which are the successors to What which was the successor to Oink. If there are any shows in particular you are looking for, DM me.

Love this New Wings

Sometimes Jake gets in his own world, no question.

I’ll be listening to this show later today though. UM always throws down in Asbury Park.

Remember it as a standout from UM podcasts

Listening to this show on nugs today. Seemed like Stasik was trying to go into Bridgeless from Night Nurse and everyone picked up on it but Jake. Sounded like they could have NN->Bridgless but they would’ve had to skip the Bridgeless intro and go straight into the verse. Imo, that would have been way better than stopping the jam and just starting Cocktopussy (even though I enjoy that tune and thought the jam after I’m on Fire was one of the best parts of the set).

That’s where I feel UM’s commitment to song form is a hindrance to them. If they allowed themselves to take a few more chances like tDB (can’t believe I just said that), even if it means the chance of making a mistake is greater, they could make their shows a lot more interesting.

One of the things I love about improv shows is not knowing what’s going to happen next. I’ve been to plenty of UM shows where they are mid-jam, the excitement of anticipating the next moment is high, and then they do something standard that ends up being a let down.

Escape goat is good, especially for it being a debut but I think the new wings is hands down the jotn

Low bar. But agreed.

This show does in fact smoke.

Def in the top 5. Interested to see what other shows stack up against it. Might be SOTY for me.

There’s improv everywhere in this one. 9/14 songs had some legs. Out of the 5 that didn’t, 1 was an opener and 1 was a 2 minute gimmick song. So 9/12 had improv essentially.

Took a debut and let it breathe for 22 minutes. Took a new song they’ve played twice before for 13 minutes.

I personally like all the improv too. Lots of different styles mixed throughout.

@NikoEstevan if you’re still doing the breakdowns, this one might be a fantastic one to do
